Rather beautifully, Professor Mahmood Mamdani's dedication in "Neither Settler Nor Native" is to his trail-blazing son, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social.

He quotes the revolutionary Chinese writer Lu Xun's famous concluding lines in "Hometown":

「其實地上本沒有路,走的人多了,也便成了路。」

a new small post on 柏舟 ("Cypress Boat") from the Book of Songs (c 600 BCE).

My heart is not a mirror
To reflect what others will

My heart is not a stone
It cannot be rolled

My heart is not a mat
It cannot be folded away

我心匪鑑 不可以茹
我心匪石 不可轉也
我心匪席 不可卷也

Tuesday’s elections were NOT about the Democratic Party.

They were about candidates focusing on the wants and needs of their constituents; about new leaders prepared to fight; about representation in every sense of the word.

Party leaders haven’t absorbed this yet.

When the Conservative Party in Korea declared martial law, the Korean Democrats knew if they didn’t send them to hell there would be no opposition afterwards. And look at them. They’re taking the ex conservative president and ensuring he never breathes free ever again.

Not a dime to any incumbent Democrat Senator who does not call for Schumer to resign as leader. (Which will mean not a dime to practically all of them.)

When I make soup from scratch it’s all-day cauldron Canto 俐湯 bone broth style. OR you need something instant and heat some stock and swirl an egg and call it dinner. There is no in-between. Taking 30 minutes is aesthetically offensive.
(Because we need a diversion)

I don’t have the NYT cooking app so someone who does might tell me: why would it take a whole *30 minutes* to make egg drop soup?? Are we collecting eggs from the hen coop? Making bone broth from scratch??

THIS
20 or so peppercorns and dried shrimp/scallops is wild. Probably tasty. But also… if I’m making egg drop soup it’s because I don’t feel like putting in much effort for anything else.

this is incredible
A dream come true: film footage of Simon Barere on TV in 1950 has surfaced and it's extraordinary. He plays an abridged version of the Gounod-Liszt Faust Waltz with his legendary dazzling technique & great lyricism - and the unmoving face of Horowitz, Moiseiwitsch & other greats. Link in comments!

Thinking of #zohranmandani ‘s father #MahmoodMamdani ‘s quote on the May Fourth writer Lu Xun. Hope is perhaps one of the best examples of #cogencytheory; it’s a thing with feathers, it’s an intellectual passion, the youthful spirit that animates how we envision a new world
“Imagine an iron house, with absolutely no windows, indestructible, with many people asleep inside who will soon die of suffocation…Would you think you are doing them a good turn [by waking them before they perish]?”

“But if a few awake, you can’t say there is no hope.”
