Stories like this show the importance of localism in investigative journalism, and by extension the critical role regional papers, online and offline play in local democracy.

In the last month of door knocking our conservative residents have expressed reservations about voting Tory citing fears over a candidates true intentions.
Seems those fears have been justified.

Worthwhile day on the doorsteps in my home patch of Barnet yesterday. Barnet is London's bellweather borough on the country and Whetstone is Barnet's Pennsylvania. Very important win with one eye on the London elections next year. Whetstone used to be the heart of a super safe Tory ward. No longer!
Whetstone (Barnet) Council By-Election Result:

🌹 LAB: 33.5% (-18.0)
🌳 CON: 28.4% (-7.8)
➡️ RFM: 20.5% (New)
🌍 GRN: 7.2% (-5.1)
🔶 LDM: 6.1% (New)
🇪🇺 REU: 2.3% (New)
🧑‍🔧 TUSC: 1.6% (New)
🙋 Ind: 0.5% (New)

Labour HOLD.
Changes w/ 2022.

Fantastic to see the government stepping in to save British Steel. In an increasingly uncertain world it’s vital that we protect our strategic industries, especially one which our construction, transport and defence sectors rely upon.
Transport for London has a proud and long-standing relationship with British Steel.

The future of the industry is important to London. I'm pleased the Government is taking action to protect its future.
