We’re bringing rent-controlled homes to London as part of the Mayor of @london.gov.uk’s new £12bn Social and Affordable Homes Programme.

Key Worker Living Rent will help the people we need to keep our city running afford to live in London, and could save tenants on average £7,000 a year.

Ground rent is money for nothing - a charge levied on leaseholders by freeholders, often based overseas.

Angela Rayner is right that the government must face down lobbying from wealthy freeholders and deliver on its manifesto promise to cap ground rents. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Is this Labour party for rich investors or hard-working leaseholders? We must make that clear today | Angela Rayner
A titanic battle is raging to prevent us capping crippling ground rents that families have to pay, often to faceless companies. We must fight and win it, says MP and former deputy PM Angela Rayner

Today we are bringing rent-controlled homes to London, launching @london.gov.uk’s new Key Worker Living Rent tenure.

@sadiqkhanlondon.bsky.social has a manifesto commitment to get 6,000 of these affordable homes underway by 2030, saving the average key worker £7,000 per year on a 2-bed flat.

It’s not letting me reply to you for some reason, but that bedspread is one LCC/GLC thing I’ve yet to find on eBay! 😍

I’m sure @nickbowes.bsky.social would love it too.

Feels quite apt that the FT Weekend have quoted a National Civil War Centre volunteer and a knife sharpener in their piece on Jenrick’s defection to Reform.

As those of us who actually live in London know, it’s a safe city.

The homicide rate is now the lowest ever on record.

How do we compare?

🇬🇧 London: 1.1 murder per 100k
🇫🇷 Paris: 1.6
🇺🇸 NYC: 2.8
🇧🇪 Brussels: 2.9
🇩🇪 Berlin: 3.2
🇺🇸 LA: 5.6

This morning Sadiq and I visited the Crisis at Christmas extended hotel service for rough sleepers, which is part-funded by City Hall. It was fantastic to hear first hand about the life changing work they’re doing to help homeless Londoners over the festive period.

City Hall works with MOPAC to provide safe accomodation and support to victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

@kayaschwartz.bsky.social and I visited the Camden Respite Rooms and met with the Domestic Abuse Navigator service who support women experiencing multiple disadvantage.

I’m horrified to hear the terrible news from Australia. An attack on the Jewish community celebrating Chanukah at Bondi Beach. My thoughts are with all those affected, the victims, their families and friends.
