Jessica spread her hands further, meeting his widened, flashing eyes, preparing to restrain him if needed to protect the much smaller woman and Ansel himself. “Anisee’, Anisee’ had a favorite poem. We both know it. We’ve lived it. Seb, you’re in there. Listen to me. Listen. Just listen.” She recited it once, and left off the last line, then recited it a second time, again unfinished. By the end of the second attempt his eyes were locked on her, his hands, knotted into the heavy cover, began to unclench. Stevens started the poem again, daring a step closer. “To the black, by honor bound, and welded to the silent sound, the breathless cold of a starlit sea, --,” her breath caught when she saw Ansel’s widened eyes lower, and his lips begin to move. His voice was a hoarse, disconnected whisper as he finally spoke again. “The only home …. that calls to thee.” Ansel broke again, overcoming the damaged identity imprinted over his own. He reached for her with both hands this time, shaking violently, his voice raw. “Jessica, get me out! Damn you, Woman, get me out!” She moved back quickly, pulling Ansel close, holding his ear to her heart, changing her breaths to match his now heaving respirations. Several long moments passed as she slowed his breathing by gradually slowing her own. When he was still at last, she spoke, lips brushing his hair. “That’s all I need.” Ansel calmed abruptly, almost lost consciousness as relief overcame him again. The victor for the moment over the programming, his eyes were a blur of exhaustion and disbelief as he looked out the port to nearest them, at the swarm of thousands of ships. “None of it’s real.”

Katherina bursts through her doorway, and immediately her heart catches in her throat. She stands there stunned, unable to act. A moment later she staggers back a step when Princess Lynna tackles her. The princess' body presses tightly against her, arms wrapping around Katherina’s body. The princess is squeezing as hard as she can, so hard Katherina can feel it even through her heavy cloak, her armor, and the winter padding beneath it. A feeling that takes her back to before her world turned upside-down. A feeling that smashes through her disbelief, so real it is as if her past year was simply a fog that is now being burned away by radiant sunlight. Katherina reaches back and fumbles to push the door closed. Some last scraps of the knight captain present in her mind moving to separate herself from her soldiers and the war outside. The moment it shuts it all lifts from her shoulders, her face presses against Lynna’s chest, and her body shudders as relieved sobs of joy flood out of her. For a full minute, the princess stands there with tears tripping down her cheeks as well, holding her trembling knight in her arms. Then their lips meet and lock together, working to enforce a shared desire to never let go again.

I could hear the sporadic sounds of the fight winding down outside, and I desperately wanted to help, to be of use, to prove myself, to not be a burden, but my body couldn’t seem to move, except to breathe heavily, shivering once in a while. I felt pathetic. I was a liability to Newhaven, and a disappointment to the Blaze. While both sides were outside battling it out for what they believed in, I was off to the side, accomplishing nothing but ruining my own reputation, and probably Rhu’s as well. Oh no, Rhu—what was I doing to him? I was dragging him down with me, on a surefire track to destroy his reputation in the village and his potential future lordship, something I had worked hard to support and help cultivate over the years, and now it was all going to come crashing down because of my asinine- “Mari!” Whit was in the living room, jumping over the back of the couch and landing next to me, grabbing me and pulling me against him, hugging me fiercely. “Are you hurt? Tell me you’re okay.” “Dad,” I blubbered, the tension I had been holding inside of my body finally breaking out. My tone concerned him, and he gently but firmly pushed me back, holding up each of my arms and scanning me for injuries; his eyes darted methodically, and when they didn’t see anything, they searched my face. Whatever he saw there, I watched in real time as it broke a little piece of his heart. One more disappointment for the record books.
