Super cool paper - using genomics and citizen science observations, this group identified five distinct lineages of Physalia (man o war/bluebottles), including a brand new species. And then they linked the populations to current movements! 🧪

Less splashy but arguably more consequential — I have another new piece out, this one for BBC, about these weird, overlooked, and possibly endangered fish that refuse to age and can't produce successful young 🐟

Bigmouth buffalo: The mysterious fish that live for a century and don't decline with age
Recent findings show bigmouth buffalo fish have perplexingly long lives and appear to get healthier as they age. But scientists are worried their population is about to crash.

Forgotten women of Paleontology: Carlotta Joaquina Maury
In the 18th and 19th centuries women’s access to science was limited. Early female scientists were often born into influential families, like Grace Milne, the eldest child of Louis Falconer and sis…

This is a friendly reminder that norovirus infections are on an absolute tear out here right now.
Hand sanitizer is not enough for this virus. Please wash your hands with soap and water frequently!
You do not want the vomiting and diarrhea combo this virus serves.

My talk is going to be all about how to make genuine local connections to weave science into your neighborhoods/communities with public art & more.

For those going to #SICB2025, it's at 10:00am on Sunday as part of the Science communication and outreach session.

Perfect example of why Google's AI search is dangerous: A major HIV medication program is ending this month, but Google will wrongly tell you it ended a year ago. So if you're on the program that's about to end, you might wrongly think this refers to some other program & that your access is safe.

Even worse, the AI says that if your enrollment ends, you can typically re-enroll for another 12 months. That's not true anymore! Now you can only re-enroll through the end of this month. This is setting people up for getting unexpectedly cut off from life-saving health care. It's really alarming.

Interesting deconstruction of the Feynman mythos. (I promise it isn't just trashing him or anything.) While I really am inspired by his work, it's hard to argue that the personality around him wasn't artificial. #Science #Physics 🧪⚛️

I guess the Spider-Man “Butt Kleenex” is making the rounds again. In 2019 I made this handy chart to show that I AM NOT THE BUTT KLEENEX ARTIST! *I* have the distinction of being the Spidey Penis Balloon artist. So, in review, Spidey Penis Balloon = Me. Spidey Butt Kleenex = Not Me. Thanks!
