Expecting reliable weather forecasts and warnings without NOAA/NWS is like expecting airlines to operate without air traffic control.

🧵

Judge here just ruled from the bench that with respect to certain agencies (see the whole thread for explanation) OPM is enjoined from directing them to fire probationary employees

He will issue a written opinion but the thread is worth reading for someone his comments along the way.
Arguments on motion for a TRO in American Federation Of Government Employees, AFL-CIO v. OPM (ND Cal)

Plaintiffs argue that OPM ordered terminations of federal probationary employees. They have documents.

They say that govt's *only* evidence is declaration from Ezell denying OPM ordered it.

Also, if this wasn’t cruel enough, zero indication that any of us will be provided any severance or leave payout as we have no right to this as employees in our probationary period. Cut off completely with no notice.

Email access is already cut off as well. Fastest govt IT has ever moved.
All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

My thoughts to the staff at NOAA going through it -- and my fellow reporters on the story late.

I'm getting two kiddos to bed. But if you're former or current NOAA who wants to talk about the implications to met and climate science with @science.org, please reach out.

I'm at Signal at voosen.01.

Something that deserves recognition:
At federal labs such as NOAA’s NSSL, ESRL, or EMC, most employees are first hired on as contractors through a company or cooperative institute. After several years, many get “promoted” by being hired as Feds. These are the “probationary employees” getting fired

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13.
I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.
Predicting El Niño and La Niña is tough, but new research analyzing 20+ years of forecasts finds dynamical models outperform statistical ones, especially for El Niño. La Niña onset? That's been much harder. Read more in our new ENSO blog post! www.climate.gov/news-feature...

The U.S. has two tsunami warning centers, both operated by NOAA. Employees were terminated from these centers today. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center covers Hawaiʻi, and now it is less safe to be near the beach.

A statement I must make:

It’s hard to articulate how sad and embarrassing this is for US science. International collaboration is the backbone of our work.

Severe cuts to nsf/nih/noaa etc pose a serious threat to US science. I worry particularly about the effect on doctoral training. The pain will be felt well beyond the public sector. What’s the long game?

How the Trump administration could end a century of American scientific dominance
Slashing federal funding for scientific research will have catastrophic and long-lasting impacts far beyond the laboratories where government research funds are spent.

#NOAA is an agency that every American can be proud of. The services they provide cannot be replaced by the private sector. The infrastructure and coordination required to operate world-class weather prediction systems is incredible. Modern Pyramids of Giza. The value added to society is enormous.

I’m feeling for all my friends, peers, and former students in the civil service who are actively being devalued by cruel forces. There are still good people out here who value you as professionals, as experts, and as selfless humans who dedicate themselves to service. Lies can’t wash the truth away.

Being a parent entails waking up and immediately doing a job (getting kids fed, dressed, and transported to school), then doing a a job (actual employment), then another job (picking up kids, feeding, bathing, and putting them to bed), followed by a job (emails, leftover work). Occasional hygiene.

I slid the following into a lecture to grad students this week:

“Asking for help is a virtue, not an admission of weakness. It’s a way of telling others they are valued.”

I wish I learned this sooner. Many of our students walk around with the weight of the world on their shoulders. #highered #stem
