I am a serious professional scientist. I am also a commissioner of climate change and have to discuss practical and pragmatic solutions with people who disagree strongly with climate action. I have a calm and optimism-driven approach to climate action.

40 inches of rain is biblically catastrophic.
Hurricane Melissa which is en route to decimate Haiti and Jamaica rapidly intensified to category 4 storm. Rapid intensification is a hallmark of climate change, but that category is only a measure of its wind speed. It is also expected to bring up to 40 inches of rain

Donald Trump and Stephen Miller's immigration agenda isn't about going after the worst of the worst.

If that was what they were doing, they wouldn't be terrorizing entire neighborhoods and hardworking folks — including U.S. citizens — at car washes and Home Depot parking lots.

According to a report released 6 months ago, 2/3 of SNAP recipients are either disabled, children, or over 60. Of the remaining 1/3, more than half worked within a month of receiving benefits, 74% worked within a year.
SNAP Provides Critical Benefits to Workers and Their Families
Policymakers should preserve the program’s vital role for workers and their families and reject proposals that would weaken SNAP benefits as participants cope with the realities of the low-wage labor ...

1. Most people on SNAP work.
2. They get it because their wages are so low.
3. SNAP is a subsidy for companies who don’t pay a decent wage.
4. Immigrants do not get SNAP.

This is the critical point—for a substantial plurality of men, the line between cosplay and real-life villainy has completely dissolved.
The millennial/Gen Z hard right views harm to an innocent as hilarious irony; the act of *causing* that harm is perceived as no more "real" than playing a prank.
Upon learning that your own mistake sent an innocent father to a brutal prison where he’s likely to be tortured, anyone with a shred of decency would be overcome with shame and fight like hell to get him back.

They think it’s funny.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

Treasury is required to produce a report to Congress related to Direct File, the free tax filing option that the current administration intends to kill. They've created a survey with a bunch of leading questions. The survey deserves some responses supportive of the program to counteract its framing:
IRS asks for public input on free tax filing options to inform congressional report | Internal Revenue Service
IR-2025-85, Aug. 21, 2025 — The IRS invites the public to participate in an anonymous feedback survey on tax preparation and filing options, which will run through Sept. 5, 2025.

Well, everyone best get it straight in their heads. After all this funding for ICE, once they've dealt with brown people who'll be next? Probably the LGBQT community. Blacks? Catholics?

Maybe Jews

For sure, it will be SOME group of people MAGA with blame for problems MAGA has no clue how to fix.

Today, Republicans made clear they are more afraid of Trump than the People.

They’ve pledged allegiance not to America, but to the Trump regime and its billionaire backers.

This is a betrayal—and a mistake.

America is resilient, and the people will not go quietly.

This fight has only just begun.
