The phonetics lab had a great time at Methods and Techniques in Phonetic Sciences this weekend! There’s some really neat research out there. We loved checking in on what techniques other labs are utilizing, and sharing how we’re using free classification at the UofC.

Genuinely love that Yiddish has a word that literally means “Saturdayish” (or even more literally “Shabbos-y”) but can just be used to mean that something is very festive

Do you ever get weirdly excited about an experimental paper? I just found one that is so clearly laid out and so meticulous that it was an absolute joy to read, and it will definitely be referenced in my thesis.

I recently came across a current linguistics grad student saying they found out that linguistics existed from the movie Arrival, and I am just so excited because Linguistics Twitter totally predicted this was gonna happen when it came out in 2016 and now IT'S HERE

They called me a walking dictionary, so obviously when I found a small, keychain-sized thesaurus at the book fair, I bought it so I could wear it on my belt loop for the rest of middle school and pedantically correct people: "actually, I'm a walking THESAURUS"

Dang, wish I still had that, tbh
I can’t imagine any Bsky early adopter was cool in high school, so what kind of loser were you?

not an original thought but bears repeating: half of writing is just being allowed time to sit on your ass uninterrupted and think about things really hard until you puzzle them out, which doesn't look or feel like work at all. but it is!

Lexiphanicism [LEKS-ih-FAN-ih-siz-im]
(n.)
-Use of excessively learned & bombastic vocabulary/phraseology in a pretentious, showy fashion

“Lieutenant Larry Longshort’s lexiphanicism leaves his listeners lost in a labyrinth of lofty lexemes & longing for lucid language.”

Every time I write an abstract, I just bang my head against the wall until I get somewhere, like a woodpecker trying to retrieve its last bit of sanity from the core of a tree.

IMO, the level of assumed background knowledge of a plenary talk at a general linguistics conference should be pitched around first year grad student

2 reasons:
- There are students in the audience!
- Profs who don't specialize in the topic probably last touched it in grad school

My most controversial opinion is that the in-the-moment narration of activities that your co-interactants don’t have access to (like what you’re doing on a computer or phone screen) is just a natural extension of the interaction order, Goffman would fucking love you muttering about it and I do too
I don't know who needs to hear this, but you don't actually have to mutter "I'm just going to share my screen..." as you share your screen in Zoom.
