An interesting piece by @johnlauner.bsky.social in the @bmj.com recently.

I know GP trainees who have done this too. Not all our younger doctors are leaving for Australia & NZ. Some are staying here but leaving the NHS.

Somehow, the system has gone horribly wrong that this is happening.

100% agree with that. The government's approach so far, and measures in the 10 year plan, place far too much emphasis on personalised prevention approaches.
These can be beneficial but won't work at the scale necessary to address the vast health inequalities

Proud to have supported the development of this timely report from the @bma.org.uk. Public health in the UK is in urgent need of investment. We're calling on all four UK governments to develop and support strong, independent public health systems that can help keep our population healthy and safe.
Public health keeps people healthy and protects them from health threats, but the system is in crisis, and the nation is sicker than ever.

Our new report sets out the urgent steps UK governments must take so the system can recover. www.bma.org.uk/what-we-do/p...

We're calling for better pay and conditions for the public health workforce, with action to tackle the shortage of public health specialists. And we're urging UK governments to protect the independent voice of public health, so specialists can speak out and advise freely. (3/4)

We're calling on UK governments to invest more in public health and ensure that funding keeps up with the needs of the population. Funding needs to be long-term, sustainable, and transparent, so public health teams can effectively plan and deliver services. (2/4)

The Lansley Reforms and abolition of PHE have left public health fragmented. In particular, too many parts of the NHS lack public health expertise. The BMA and FPH have made clear that investing in PH, both in the NHS and elsewhere, is essential if the government is to achieve its health mission.
3 really important priorities for Gov to address:
🧑‍⚕️Fix general practice
🩺Bring public health back front and centre
🏥Train and retain our workforce

It's a top down philosophy, but it's listening from the bottom up.

Last week, a @bmj.com opinion piece suggested that the NHS Health Check should be abolished and instead, everyone over 50 should be given a polypill.

Here's why it's not such a great idea and what could perhaps be done instead 👇

Pleased to support this emergency motion at @bma.org.uk Public Health Conference yesterday.

England's PH system is already fragmented. If the government is to succeed in its ambition to halve the gap in healthy life expectancy then it must protect its PH workforce.

G8 thread @admbriggs.bsky.social on #publichealth #grant. Need to see i) ambition beyond this re prevention shift from govt (eg www.kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-...), & ii) other bits of discretionary £ eg drugs - so what does the pot really add up to? DHSC is making it harder to see that over time.

A good first step but the PH grant still remains 26% smaller in real terms when compared to 2015. If the government is serious about "preventing sickness and not just treating it" then it must invest further in the PHG and the public health workforce.
Plans to increase the public health grant in England are a positive step, but more must be done.
