“You can’t tell me a parking space at the corner of a street is worth a life.”

Advocates are in front of the district office of @galeabrewer.bsky.social this morning to ask her why she changed her mind and no longer supports universal daylighting in NYC.

@nyc-dot.bsky.social is making up math here. There are roughly 300 intersections on the UWS or ~2,400 potential daylighting spots, many of which are already bus stops or fire hydrants.

@galeabrewer.bsky.social got some bad information.

Why are we bean counting street safety in the first place?
DOT's crusade against a Council bill for universal daylighting was able to peel off support by Council Member Gale Brewer, after agency officials told her it would remove 13,000 parking spots in her Upper West Side district. nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/09/30/g...

Hear me out here - by killing the open street on Vanderbilt, it became less of a destination and the neighborhood can't support restaurants like that if it's not a destination
Prospect Heights became a true restaurant row thanks to the strength of spots like Olmsted, Faun and LaLou. But a spate of closings and skyrocketing rents have many wondering whether the street’s best days are in its past.

"This is a great first step, or option for some areas. But we’d love to see some simpler hardening at a quicker pace." - @chabotjackson.bsky.social

Passing Intro 1138 will get us there by mandating universal daylighting citywide & that 1,000 intersections are hardened each year!
The new design would effectively create protected bike lanes at corners thanks to the barriers, even if there is only an unprotected cycling path or a shared lane on the approach.

In 2024, traffic violence killed a New Yorker every 35 hours. Lives are on the line, which is why today, we're proud to announce the Progressive Caucus's endorsement of our member @cmjuliewon.bsky.social's lifesaving legislation - Intro 1138 - that calls for universal daylighting in New York City.
