Nel picks up odd jobs a lot during his travels, most of them basically being like the sidequests we do in game. He also works as a pseudo-gleaner sometimes, since he's not actually employed by Sharlayan.
He sends the money he makes (outside of what he needs for survival) back home.

I think mine was either to change up my ears and tail for Nel or to upscale textures, I forget which.
For ears/tail, definitely a lore reason - Nel has bigger ears and a fluffier tail due to being half viera.
