Are you interested in being a BSA Theory Study Group Co-convenor? The Theory Study Group of the British Sociological Association needs new co-convenors! The current members of the convening team (Ioana Cerasella Chis, Joe Davidson, and Sebastian Raza) took on this role in July 2022 and we are now looking for (potentially three) BSA members to take up the torch and continue developing the Study Group in the coming years. We are keen to ensure a smooth transition by passing on what we have learnt over the past three years. To that end, we invite expressions of interest from individuals or teams to join the current co-convening team in July 2025, with the expectation that the newly appointed convenors would take over the leadership of the group from July 2026. To apply, please send a statement of up to 200 words to bsatheory@gmail.com describing your interest in the role, alongside a brief outline of one or two events that you would like to host in the coming academic year. To learn more about our previous activities, please visit this page; our latest annual report (from summer 2024) is available here. Information regarding the BSA's Study Groups and their Terms of Reference can be found here. Please note that to be eligible for this role, you need to be a member of the BSA and should not be co-convening any other Study Group (to avoid conflicts of interest). Contesting the service model of ‘care’ in disabling capitalism: a Disability Politics perspective Author: Ioana Cerasella Chis Article Category: Research Article Copyright: © Author 2024 Online Publication Date: 10 Jun 2024 Abstract Mainstream feminist perspectives on social reproduction often portray non-disabled women as active providers of a service (care) to those assumed to be its passive, agency-less recipients. In response, this article accounts for social reproduction as a key factor in the reproduction of disabling capitalist social relations and argues for an understanding of social reproduction that no longer obscures the contributions of those considered to be ‘cared for’. Alternatives to what is termed here ‘the service model of care’ can be established through mobilising and organising for In(ter)dependent Living through an anti-productivist politics whose social relations prefigure alternatives against and beyond disabling capitalism. About the Event The process of producing social theory is often assumed to be self-explanatory within academic institutions. With the current ‘crisis’ of higher education and intensification of academic precarity disproportionately affecting theoretical scholarship, centres, departments, and institutes, the co-organisers of this Symposium wish to create a space for Early Career scholars interested in social theory to receive feedback on their ongoing research/papers and discuss the day-to-day experiences, challenges, and opportunities of continuing to undertake theoretical scholarship. We are honoured to announce that our guest discussants are Sarah Bufkin (Assistant Professor in Political Theory at the University of Birmingham), Birgan Gokmenoglu (Lecturer in Sociology at Birmingham City University), Teodor Mladenov (Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Dundee), and Kristin Surak (Associate Professor in Sociology at the London School of Economics).

The UK's HSE in its reply to the University of Birmingham SMT's response to Birmingham UCU's complaint: 'I do not consider that your reply provides sufficient assurance that work-related stress is being suitably managed by the University'.

Date: 13 December 2024 Dear Professor Tickell, RE: Concerns about the Management of Work-related Stress Thank you for your reply sent on 16 September 2024, I have considered the contents and discussed it with colleagues. The outcome being that I do not consider that your reply provides sufficient assurance that work-related stress is being suitably managed by the University. This is because almost all your stated control measures are tertiary, or lagging measures, that deal with stress once it has become a problem. For instance, tracking the reasons why your employees access the employee assist programme, and your staff survey being a lagging measure of the University’s performance. I have considered your offer to get in touch if I have further queries, but I do not think further correspondence will be sufficient and as a result we will be inspecting the University’s management of work-related stress in the new year. Can you please provide a point of contact by Friday 10 January 2025, so that we can obtain a better understanding of the organisational structure, your management arrangements, and processes before undertaking the inspection. Section 28(8) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires me to inform your employees about matters affecting their health and safety. As such, I have sent a copy of this letter to the University and College Union as a representative of your employees. Funny thing to ask (considering… everything), but: does anyone know of any funding for social theory research (apart from, I guess, Leverhulme & the British Academy)? In particular, are there any less known organisations that are worth checking out?
