Generic November Writing Challenge Day 13 GeNoWriCha 2025 Day 13 word count: 22,158 out of 50,000 Erin said nothing, scouring the cabinets for the illusive coffeemaker. She made a rather embarrassing noise of triumph when she found it, hauling it up from below the counter. It was a fancy thing, with a built-in bean grinder and milk steamer and all the other bells and whistles. Jack looked at it like it was a bomb he’d have to defuse. “Don’t worry,” Erin assured him, chest puffed out in confidence. “I used to work at the campus coffee shop as an undergrad.” “And yet you abided by the swill Trance Corp fed you?” Jack teased. “Good coffee takes time, which I never had working for TC,” Erin said. That was something she hadn’t really wanted to admit to herself before. She’d had so little time for any of the small joys in life. And now, even on the run, it felt like she had all the time in the world. It felt like she was almost required to take that time for the joys TC had denied her. Good coffee, fresh air, people who sold her onions at a discount because they thought she was pretty. “Well…” Two large, warm hands settled on her hips. She blinked, almost startled. When had he gotten so close? She could feel his breath on her cheek. Her eyes couldn’t look away from his, counting every speck of green in the hazel. “Now you have plenty. Yeah?” Her voice was little more than a breath. “Yeah…”

They pulled her into flesh – hot like a furnace and somehow both soft and hard under her fingertips – and held her. “It’s alright,” a deep voice murmured into her ear. “It’s alright, sunshine. I’ve got you. No one’s going to hurt you. I promise.” Erin blinked away sleep and tears, finding herself in that small, newly familiar room. Right. The cottage. They’d made it to the safe place. The place where they could hide and no one would find them. “Jack?” she whispered, voice raspy. She must have been screaming in her sleep. Guilt bit at her. “I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean to…” Jack shushed her, one of his hands coming up to her hair, running those callous-rough fingers through it. “Don’t. You have nothing to apologize for.”

Then, again, like he was trying to reassure himself instead. “It’ll be better.”

Not to be the fun police but I do hope people know that Arc Raiders does use generative AI for voice acting, and by supporting the game you're letting higher-ups know that this is an okay practice.

They try to downplay this on the Steam store page by describing the AI usage as vaguely as possible.
