Generic November Writing Challenge Day 13 GeNoWriCha 2025 Day 13 word count: 22,158 out of 50,000 Erin said nothing, scouring the cabinets for the illusive coffeemaker. She made a rather embarrassing noise of triumph when she found it, hauling it up from below the counter. It was a fancy thing, with a built-in bean grinder and milk steamer and all the other bells and whistles. Jack looked at it like it was a bomb he’d have to defuse. “Don’t worry,” Erin assured him, chest puffed out in confidence. “I used to work at the campus coffee shop as an undergrad.” “And yet you abided by the swill Trance Corp fed you?” Jack teased. “Good coffee takes time, which I never had working for TC,” Erin said. That was something she hadn’t really wanted to admit to herself before. She’d had so little time for any of the small joys in life. And now, even on the run, it felt like she had all the time in the world. It felt like she was almost required to take that time for the joys TC had denied her. Good coffee, fresh air, people who sold her onions at a discount because they thought she was pretty. “Well…” Two large, warm hands settled on her hips. She blinked, almost startled. When had he gotten so close? She could feel his breath on her cheek. Her eyes couldn’t look away from his, counting every speck of green in the hazel. “Now you have plenty. Yeah?” Her voice was little more than a breath. “Yeah…”

GeNoWriCha 2025 - Day 12 GeNoWriCha 2025 - Day 12 word count: 20,510 out of 50,000 New hands – large and warm and rough in texture but gentle in touch – wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her up and out of the bed linens. They pulled her into flesh – hot like a furnace and somehow both soft and hard under her fingertips – and held her. “It’s alright,” a deep voice murmured into her ear. “It’s alright, sunshine. I’ve got you. No one’s going to hurt you. I promise.” Erin blinked away sleep and tears, finding herself in that small, newly familiar room. Right. The cottage. They’d made it to the safe place. The place where they could hide and no one would find them. “Jack?” she whispered, voice raspy. She must have been screaming in her sleep. Guilt bit at her. “I’m sorry. I-I didn’t mean to…” Jack shushed her, one of his hands coming up to her hair, running those callous-rough fingers through it. “Don’t. You have nothing to apologize for.”

GeNoWriCha Day 10 word count: 19,013 out of 50,000 “Are we safe?” she asked. “Not until we get past the bay,” he admitted. “But we’re out of that specific danger zone, yeah.” Erin nodded, bringing the seat back into its upright position. “How much longer until we’re…” She trailed off, knowing what the answer to that question would actually be. “We’re safe?” Jack finished the question for her. “Yeah.” Jack’s jaw worked, like he was trying to come up with a pretty lie to tell her. “Honestly, sunshine, I don’t know if we ever will be.” Erin let out a tiny, bitter breath of a laugh. “That’s what I thought you’d say.” “It’ll be better,” he told her, voice firm and reassuring. Then, again, like he was trying to reassure himself instead. “It’ll be better.”

Day 6 of Generic November Writing Month 2025 Current Word Count: 13,611 out of 50,000 “You’re not sleeping on the damn floor!” she shouted, forgetting where they were. She clamped her mouth shut, waiting for complaints or disgruntled pounding against the walls. When nothing came, she inhaled deeply and spoke again. “I’m not about to take a whole ass king bed to myself while you sleep on the dirty hotel floor.” J-097 opened his mouth to argue. “Don’t fight me on that, soldier. There are seven floors in this damn building there’s no way they deep clean every room after use.” J-097 closed his mouth. “Get in bed,” Erin ordered gently. “Please.” J-097 exhaled loudly through his nose, rubbing at his face. “Yeah,” he said, barely more than a whisper. “Yeah, alright.” Erin slipped under the covers as J-097 picked himself and his pillow up from the floor. She’d been correct. There was plenty of space for the two of them. The space between them felt cavernous, especially compared to the car. Erin hadn’t realized how used she’d gotten to feeling his body heat along her arm until there was space between them. She almost – almost – wanted to ask him to come closer, to share his warmth with her. She bit that feeling back, swallowing it down. It left her stomach churning. “Good night,” she murmured as he reached up to turn off the light. He paused, his hazel eyes meeting hers. She watched his throat bob. “Good night.”

Generic November Writing Month day 5 graphic Generic November Writing Challenge Day 5 word count: 12,095 out of 50,000 “I know, I know,” he murmured, words gentle even though it couldn’t make up for what his hands were doing. “We’re almost there.” She felt him tug the chip free, grateful for its smooth edges. The pain didn’t stop, but it did fade, at least until he pressed the gauze against the open wound. She whimpered into the washcloth again. “You did good, sunshine,” he told her. “You did so good. Didn’t scream once.” “Are you…” She swallowed thickly. “Are you sure I won’t need a suture or anything?” “Shouldn’t,” he said, lifting the gauze to check the incision. “I got some butterfly bandages. Should work well enough.” He busied himself with dressing her wound, and Erin made herself busy with watching him. His fingers were rough with work and hardship, but gentle. So much about him was surprisingly gentle, soft almost. “Were you a medic unit?” she asked quietly. “Is that what the J series were?” He seemed to hesitate then, hand lingering as he made a loop of gauze around her palm. “No. No, J series units were regular infantrymen.” “Oh.” She felt a little silly for asking. “You’re very good at it.”

GeNoWriCha 2025 day 4 update graphic GeNoWriCha 2025 Day 4 word count: 10.500 out of 50,000 “J-097.” She froze with the can halfway to her mouth for a second sip. “I’m sorry?” “J-097,” he repeated. “That was my designation. Clone model J, iteration ninety-seven.” Erin’s jaw went slack, but her hands went tight, denting the can and sloshing some of the coffee out onto her skirt. She couldn’t bring herself to care at the moment. “You’re a Minuteman.” Minutemen – Erin was fairly certain their official name were ‘Artificial Combat Units,’ but no one called them that outside of government officials and the military contractors that made them – were introduced during the early years of the War as a solution to the many large, loud protests against the potential drafting of civilians. No need for a draft when you could grow a platoon of soldiers in a matter of months, training preprogrammed into their brains and everything. It was a miracle of modern science. The program was decommissioned after the Treaty of Boston was signed at the end of the War. No one asked what happened to the clones that remained. Erin supposed she was finding out.

Only one of them looked up as she approached, an older woman with blonde hair that was just starting to turn grey at the temples. “Erin,” she greeted, voice still holding onto that sleepy gravel. “Patricia,” Erin greeted in kind, reaching for a fresh coffee cup. “How’s your project going? The new chemotherapy drug, right?” Patricia grunted. “Same as your project, I presume. Like shit.”
