Nilo Makela was from my home town. He was a leader fighting fascists in Spain.

Today is Nov 19. On this date in 2013 biochemist Frederick Sanger passed away. One of only 5 to have won the Nobel Prize twice! Was awarded the prize in 1958 for his determination of the structure of the insulin molecule, and in 1980 for determining the base sequences in nucleic acids.

Now that he has passed I thought I would share this letter I received in 2013 from James Watson after I wrote to ask whether he or Crick had discussed the DNA work with Franklin following publication of the structure in 1953. Relations were cordial but the matter was not discussed.

Don't make her life be about the DNA debacle. She died far too young, but she was a promising scientist in her own right, a mentor and scientific author.
