Absolutely chuffed to announce that I have a story in this month's Aurealis magazine!

It's an Australian gothic historical horror that begins with something that has always scared the shit out of me: a knock on the door in the middle of the night.

December blog is up!

Featuring a passionate defense of Last Christmas, thoughts on Pluribus and Fallout, and reviews of four books I enjoyed a whole lot (including Claire North’s new big-brained, bittersweet space opera Slow Gods).

Check it out and tell a friend!

See why do we have to have like bigots and Nazis and hating other people for stupid ass reasons when I just looked at my planet from the surface of another planet and I don't even have shoes on. I'm in Soft House Clothes and slippers looking at my planet on my phone.

What.
Open up this picture fully.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.

The same old lies to justify limiting aid and avoiding international scrutiny. A government with good intentions would not send away MSF. We cannot support this, #auspol.
Israel says it will suspend several humanitarian groups, including Doctors Without Borders, in 2026 for failing its new vetting rules for groups working in Gaza. Some international organizations have said that Israel’s rules are arbitrary and could endanger staff.

The sheer volume of folk who are just completely oblivious to the scale of this (and impending future) fuckery is terrifying, and also deeply depressing. What a stupid time to be alive.
Labor is simultaneously talking about letting CSG, a Zionist security org with close links to the IDF, carry heavy firearms at events in Australia, and also Australians can't protest anymore... What does that feel like?? Seriously?? Anyone that isn't batshit psycho ok with this?

I would like certain authors to know that their passionate blogs/skeets/whatevers in defense of their use of GenAI is only succeeding in making sure I never bother checking out their work, and at least one has resulted in me taking a book off the shelf and lobbing it in a donation bin.

if your product can induce suicides, I think it's not sufficient to put a label on it saying, "warning, don't use this for suicides."
In case you needed one more reason not to use AI …

The CEO of ChatGPT is blaming a teen’s suicide on his failure to follow the terms of service:

Adam Raine, 16, told ChatGPT he was suicidal and the AI bot told him his feelings were valid and even provided suggestions and detailed instructions.
OpenAI says teen's 'misuse' of ChatGPT is to blame for his suicide, because he broke the TOU: 'Users must comply with OpenAI's Usage Policies, which prohibit the use of ChatGPT for suicide or self-har...
The lawyer presenting Adam Raine's family calls the response "disturbing" and I have to agree.

IF YOU ARE READING SOMETHING AND IT IS HARD BUT YOU HAVE TO READ IT

1. use a thing that will sit right under the line you're reading, so you know where you are in the text

2. read it out loud because your active participation will help

3. get a definition of a weird word and WRITE IT DOWN
