So we're just rebranding personalization engines as AI now?
Every year a fast-food chain says they're going big on AI and then in the fine print you realize it's just "sell milkshakes when hot" www.wsj.com/articles/mcd...

Actual government efficiency
18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was demolished by Musk’s team shortly after midnight. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 billion.

"We never validated our core assumptions before investing heavily" - a tale as old as time
Ex-Amazon Gaming VP said they failed to compete with Steam despite spending loads of tons of time and money

"We were at least 250X bigger ... we tried everything ... but ultimately Goliath lost"

Podcast hosts: the country is in a constitutional crisis and the rule of law doesn't exist.

This thread is an excellent reminder: tech shouldn't be deployed just because it can; the aim is to solve real people's problems first and always.

Guys, I’ve just seen the worst job advert in the world. Absolute state of this.

These gaps make TV feel like a chore. It's a ton of work to plug yourself back into the show's world - whether it's a rewatch or looking up summaries to read.

And that's why I simply stopped watching some shows I really liked. Their moment for me has passed.
Would you like a vintage Mo Ryan Rant (tm)? Check this out! In which I talk about a VERY annoying trend in TV, the growing and frequently ridiculous gaps between seasons. What if there was something TV purveyors could do to address this (there is!!)

It can take years for a streaming series to return for another season. Maybe this one weird trick would help platforms convince viewers to tune in again.

Listened to a podcast that described the key to a company's huge success: bring customers in early to show them work-in-progress and get feedback early.

This type of thing isn't really talked about a lot, yet it's foundational to making good products.

There is only one side where lying is a core part of their existence; that does not mean fact-checking is politically biased
"We're going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes, similar to X, starting in the U.S," Mark Zuckerberg announces

He asserts that "the fact-checkers have just been too politically biased, and have destroyed more trust than they've created, especially in the U.S."

The worst copycat feature I've seen in a long time is Spotify Unwrapped-style recaps in places it doesn't make sense.

This year it's Miro with "gee, you like working, don't you!"

Last year the Washington Post was like "you sure spent a lot of time being informed of what's going on!"

Stumbled on an article about this smart thermostat. Not the point of the article, but it has terrible UI design.

Easy to use... pfft. People need contrast to read and interact with things!

Working on products that have been around a long time is constantly coming up against the butterfly effect:

Many years ago, someone made an architectural decision that was completely reasonable at the time. And that's why today you can't add a basic feature without breaking a half-dozen things.

So much this. But unfortunately much of the world - especially corporate life - is designed to favor those who have instant takes and speak them authoritatively
We pay too much attention to the most confident voices—and too little attention to the most thoughtful ones.

Conviction is not a sign of credibility. Speaking assertively is not a substitute for reflecting deeply.

It's better to learn from complex thinkers than smooth talkers.

I saw this fantastic video on 1984. George Orwell pulled from his time volunteering in the Spanish Civil War and seeing propaganda on all sides. Another big inspiration was him being treated for tuberculosis.

When have any of his companies showed they're willing to put up any kind of guardrails, much less thoughtful ones (like the kind needed to manage people's health information)?

If anything, all evidence points to the opposite being true.
