This just highlights the fact that “blue collar” and “white working class” are now primarily defined not by economics but by cultural signifiers, mostly sharing a set of very retrograde prejudices.
in addition, by virtue of having a kind of blue collar affect himself, trump's very presence enhances the esteem of identities that are associated with hard work and americanism. supporting trump can then become a way to enhance your own sense of status or even to assimilate into the mainstream.

2) The "we're going to hold out until the writers lose their houses" statement during the WGA didn't just fortify the writers, it genuinely radicalized some managers and agents I know. People really do not know what capital thinks of them. To wit ... they don't.
