The #garden, oblivious to the carousel of world events, is optimistic at dusk:
Clematis urophylla 'Winter Beauty' promising to flower for the first time
Daphne pontica pushing out buds of its yellow/green scented spring flowers
Helleborus niger the Xmas rose is here already

To Melbourne Hall, Derbs. Early C18 inc statues by Jan van Nost, & Bakewell's 1711 'Birdcage'.

Formal, with later borders around former mill leets.

Good pinetum (sad to see a metasequoia suffered in this summer's heat) and a great quartet of swamp cypress around a suitably green swampy pool.

PERSON OF THE DAY. 16 January 1902. Scottish sprinter Eric Liddell was born in Tianjin, China. As a committed Christian, he refused to run in heats of the 100 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics because they were held on a Sunday, but won the 400 metres. His story featured in Chariots of Fire.
