I look forward to reading this book by two of the most astute observers of Taiwanese history and society.

For anyone interested in truly understanding Taiwan and its people, I would recommend you seek out their writing.

The US went from concern that China’s Belt-Road initiative was making gains in Africa, to ceding the world’s fastest-growing continent to China by pulling out the State Dept and cancelling various initiatives.

This from the White House that says the top international priority is outcompeting China.

I'm glad to see the University of Illinois stand up for academic freedom and international students in the face of Trump admin attacks. Princeton, Wesleyan, Eastern Michigan, and some other schools are doing similarly.

Much better than the misguided appeasement attempts of Columbia and others.

I think it’s important that we place blame on the institutions which led to this moment. It’s not just Trump and the Republican Party—it’s the presidency, the US Senate and the two party system.

If we want to protect against dictatorship, we will need a new political system.
i think it's worse than this. the Republican Party as an institution has thoroughly discredited itself as either interested in or capable of being trustworthy with respect to basic democratic governance
One man just wiped out $10 trillion in wealth, is destroying centuries-old legal protections, and seems determined to unravel humanity’s greatest public health achievement. In 3 months.

I don’t know how we get out of this. But if we do, one person can never have that kind of power again.

This part of the Tufts declaration somehow warms my heart the most: a full-throated defense of Rümeysa Ötürk's op-ed criticizing the Tufts president, signed by the Tufts president! This is how it's supposed to be!
"The University declares that this opinion piece was not in violation of any Tufts policies. Further, no complaints were filed with the University or, to our knowledge, outside of the University about this op-ed."

I'm reminded of Jamelle Bouie's point about the need for people with ambition at this moment. Eisgruber has the potential to become a historically important figure in higher education, not just at Princeton, but in the U.S. as a whole. Others could, too!
Princeton has announced that it is considering selling approximately $320 million of taxable bonds. The bonds are a way for the University to raise short-term funds. The major credit-rating agencies rate University bonds AAA, the highest level of creditworthiness.

As a birthright citizen and an academic who has worked both in & outside the US, I recognize it as a duty to put my name next to the ideals I believe in, esp when so many non-citizens are being targeted for doing the same. 'A democracy is only as strong as its commitment to intellectual integrity.'
We came together in response to recent attacks on academic freedom and DEI, and now to the deportations. We are focused on making visible how higher ed is fighting back, and on encouraging others to fight. We started with this letter: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
