The book is fairly essayistic and digressive - we wanted to bring that kind of spirit to the writing, since so much of what is written about Taiwan is by necessity direct, compressed, highly empirical and data-driven. So it was a bit of an experiment in style and approach :)

Thanks for reading, Graham :) I also hate having one-day-a-week, 3-hour-at-a-time classes. Terrible structure, I would like to have a word with whoever decided that all Taiwanese college classes should be arranged this way :/
