Canadians were lied to by The CONS and The Rich about the Carbon Rebates.

Albertans left $2100 a year on the table.

Tell me again how much your gas prices and grocery prices have come down since this rebate went away? How about house insurance rates in Alberta?

You GOT SCREWED kids.

Say what you want about his predecessor, when it came to Trump he 100% stood on business. And I strongly believe that he governed on the basis of doing what he felt was right rather than what was the most politically expedient thing to do, however flawed some of his policies have been.
Mark Carney’s decision to rescind Canada’s digital services tax is a cowardly move that shows Trump he can be pressured into making trade concessions.

It also shows how much Carney is willing to give into corporate demands, and particular those of the tech industry.

I don’t have super strong opinions about this yet, and I realize Carney has to safeguard the economy in general, but I reflexively dislike the optics of Canada backing down to bullies. I’d rather he just threaten to block Meta & Twitter altogether—they’re currently hostile to our national interests

The pivot from campaign rhetoric to Carney’s governing style shouldn’t be a surprise.

He’s a former central banker who thinks attracting capital should be the priority above all else — and that means doing whatever will keep rich investors happy.

Carney’s government has been rolling out the red carpet for tech investment.

They killed a capital gains tax increase, are limiting AI regulations, planning AI-enabled austerity, and now have killed the digital services tax all to placate tech executives.

Carney said it was “elbows up” against the United States, but a lot of that has fallen away since the election.

The Trump administration has noticed how quickly he caved on the digital services tax, and they certainly perceive Carney as weak as a result.

Digital services taxes are a direct response to US tech multinationals not paying their fair share in the countries they operate. The United States has stood in the way of a global deal coming into force, and that’s why countries have been implementing them.
