The earthquake occurred at a major plate boundary: here, the Caribbean Plate moves past North America.

Large magnitude 7+ earthquakes happen about once a month somewhere on and can usually be detected globally! This deep M7.1 #Earthquake in #Indonesia 🇮🇩is a perfect example, now being detected in Newtown, PA at our Newtown Middle School seismic monitoring station. (Not 🧍felt)

Had a doubly exciting couple of days at sea: we visited the Mushroom vent at Axial Volcano and swapped out some OOI gear, and then this morning ROV Jason helped rescue an MBARI mapping AUV that had decided it wanted to stay at 40 m depth! 🧪🐟

She built the first accurate map of the Atlantic Ocean floor, discovering the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that provided evidence for seafloor spreading and plate tectonics. 🧪
