Massive, historic M8.8 #Earthquake off the coast of eastern Russia 🇷🇺, easily picked up across the globe in Newtown, PA on our AS-1 @earthscope.org vertical seismometer (not felt by people in PA). Tsunami watches may still be in effect - BE SAFE Hawaii and West Coast! Heed all Gov't warnings!

A M6.8 earthquake struck southern Cuba earlier today, days after Hurricane Rafael made landfall to the west, knocking out the country's electrical grid.

The earthquake occurred at a major plate boundary: here, the Caribbean Plate moves past North America.

Large magnitude 7+ earthquakes happen about once a month somewhere on and can usually be detected globally! This deep M7.1 #Earthquake in #Indonesia 🇮🇩is a perfect example, now being detected in Newtown, PA at our Newtown Middle School seismic monitoring station. (Not 🧍felt)

Had a doubly exciting couple of days at sea: we visited the Mushroom vent at Axial Volcano and swapped out some OOI gear, and then this morning ROV Jason helped rescue an MBARI mapping AUV that had decided it wanted to stay at 40 m depth! 🧪🐟
