A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

When Russia heavily censors Twitter, Rubio is perfectly okay with that. When the EU levies a fine against Twitter for deceptive advertising and fraudulent content because they allow marketing by fake Twitter accounts that scam Twitter consumers, Rubio goes through the roof— who calls the shots here?

The Biden admin didn’t even want to mention Republicans in WH press releases. They worried this would violate the Hatch Act and consulted legal counsel. Really! That’s how wide the gulf in basic political warfare is between the two parties. GOP is in full battle. The Democrats are out to lunch.

A core problem for American liberalism is a constitutional inability to tell people who were important to the movement decades ago to go away because they're not relevant anymore.

Reagan/GW Bush admin people might as well not exist to the modern right. Maybe that's...something to consider.
Hillary Clinton blames TikTok and “totally made up” videos for young people’s views on Israel and Palestine.

She says social media influenced “not just the usual suspects” but also “young Jewish Americans who don’t know the history and don’t understand.”

Company man. How was the DC perp "radicalized," as Kristi Noem says? He believed he had been recruited, trained and then abandoned by the CIA. And an objective assessment would conclude that he was right to feel that way. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

just a reminder that *lots* of countries have universities, and (to my knowledge) none of them but the U.S. treat their universities as largely minor league sports franchises
LSU is paying its previous football coach over $50 million NOT to coach there while likely guaranteeing Kiffin something approaching double that, all while having an academic hiring freeze and budget cuts across the board. What is the purpose of a university (rhetorical)?
SOURCES: Lane Kiffin is expected to accept LSU's offer to become the Tigers next head coach. Kiffin is set to meet with his Ole Miss team this morning at 9 AM CT. As we reported yesterday morning, LSU has been very confident it was going to land Kiffin. www.nytimes.com/athletic/684...

Do you hope it keeps ticking?

Why do we call these birds "turkeys"?

Add this to the list of "European explorers are bad at naming things". EVERYTHING new was "turkish" because of rising cultural influence of the Turkish (Ottoman) Empire.

Corn: "Turkish wheat"
Pumpkins: "Turkish cucumbers"

And that's how you get Turkey-cock.

Biden commuted their death sentences, so Trump retaliated by making their lives living hell, putting them in the country's most brutal prison, where they "spend 22 to 24 hours a day locked alone inside concrete cells that are smaller than a standard parking space."

Pure, pointless cruelty.

Guillotine, Shrapnel, Algorithm, Leotard, Saxophone, Jacuzzi, Sandwich, Cardigan, Nacho...

All common words that are just the name of their inventors.

And I think I have threads on most of them? 😧
In 1784, British Lt. Henry Shrapnel of Royal Artillery invented a 'spherical case' cannon shell that exploded in mid-air, raining down lead shot on infantry.

It was replaced in 1803 with a modified design that came to be known as the 'Shrapnel shell' & the name came to refer to the projectiles.
