A medium sized tan and white dog stands on a trail in a woods that in this area is dominated by white oaks. Their leaves that are mostly a bright red which is a fairly unusual color as they generally a much deeper and darker red (or even a reddish brown).

Two frost flowers close together, both with swirls and ripples. In my area, the dittany plant can form frost flowers when the temperatures are below freezing overnight but the ground is not already frozen. The cold temperatures cause liquid in the stem of the dittany to expand, causing cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then forced out throw the cracks and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem creating the 'flower'. A tall frost flower with two 'wings' and a swirling ribbon. A frost flower with small ripples, curves, and a solitary curved ribbon at the bottom. A melting frost flower is almost transparent.

A reflection in a glass building shows a brick church and the branches of a nearly bare tree. There is a distinct edge that is the corner of the building. Along the edge is an actual tree that is also nearly bare. Its branches are 'touching' the reflected tree branches as if they a part of the same tree.

The photo doesn't match the song lyrics but the spirit is the same as a path I know well leads me into and through the woods which are a mix of colors (red, yellow, green, orange).

Fall color is finally starting to slowly come on, though the color is much better in some parts of the woods. Happily for me, one of the better spots is right at our house.

@aferguson.bsky.social Shocking discovery today: I was checking out the paph orchid flower as it’s opened up now, and it looks like there is a second flower on the same stalk — that’s never happened before! I’m not sure if it will mature or wither and fall off, but what a surprise to see.

A malamutt called Giddy is wading in a creek in a fall woods. There are leaves on the ground and large flat, squarish rocks line the banks of the creek. A muscular tan dog with a white chest, white forlegs, a white muzzle, and a skinny white-tipped tail stand in a pond that is a deep orange-brown from reflected leaves. A beagle mix is standing on the sloping bank of a lake. His head is down and his butt is up and he is some distance away. The shore of the lake is heavily wooded and is a mxi of yellow, red, green, and orange. The colors are reflected in the lake. A medium-sized chestnut colored dog with a black muzzle stands on a fallen log with her down, sniffing the log. The woods behind her is a mix of green and tan leaves. Most of the leaves, of either color, belong to beech trees.

I'd like to be able to tell you something about this huge solo monolith on the beach at Lækjavik Nature Preserve but there's nothing about it in my #Iceland geology book and my google-fu failed to turn up any geologic information.

The Hólmanes-Eskifjörður Nature Preserve was my favorite hike of the trip to #Iceland. It had it all -- scenic variety, an interesting and challenging trail, critters, flowers, and solitude.

This trail is on the east coast of Iceland. The photo looks across Reyðarfjörður to the snow-covered mountains on the other side. The water is very still and there are several large rocks (tiny islands?) exposed in it. In the foreground is a rugged terrain with a mix of lava and greenery. This is the eightpetal mountain-avens which is the national flower of Iceland. The flower is found on stalks 1-4 inches long (3–10 cm) long, and has eight rounded white petals with yellow inner bits. A large, triangle-shaped sheer cliff with rugged walls dominates the photo. It is flat on top. In the background are the waters of Eskifjörður with a gull or tern flying overhead and many small ducks that appear as dots on the water.

A forest of sparse trees due to what appears to be an emerald ashbore issue (at least based on my knowledge of what that looked like from back east) and a thick underbrush. a trail is mowed through the center which feature a small brown dog named Porcini.

A creek flows through a woods. There is a slope of a hill making a bank one side and the valley floor forming the bank on the opposite side. The woods are so extremely green that even the reflection in the creek is a very deep green.

It's #WaterfallWednesday so here's one of the iconic #Iceland waterfalls: Svartifoss, flowing over a cliff of columnar basalt. #photography #waterfalls #geology.
Svartifoss, 65 feet (20 meters) tall is one of the chief attractions in the Skaftafell area of Vatnajökull National Park. At the top, the basalt columns are broken off several layers deep making them look a little like an upside down pipe organ.

Sand kicked up by the winds from a storm that didn't make it over the mountains gives this black-and-white photo a soft, hazy look. The dunes are swept to the right in a series of ridges with dark mountains behind. The sky is dark and cloudy.

Very nice light on the road right off our driveway is not a rare occurrence so I've learned to live with utility poles and wires in photo. This black-and-white photo has wide streaks of light coming down from the top of the photo onto a sun-and-shadow road overhung by large trees. The utility pole and wires are on the right edge of the road. This color photo was taken on a different day and a few farther from the end of driveway. Only utility wires to the right in this photo. Light comes down through the trees cause the road speckled with gold and shadows. The sun is just visible through the branches.
