A touch of color on a gray day was a pleasant surprise. #photography #clouds #lavender
I was standing in a parking lot in Indianapolis and looked up to see unexpected color on a cloudy day. There were enough breaks in the clouds to allow the sunlight to create streaks and turn some of the clouds a purple shade. I cropped the photo to show the sky without the parking lot clutter.

Volunteers with the Hoosier Hikers Council are building a #hiking #trail in 2018 near Shoals , Indiana. (More in the ALT) #photography #woods #Support_Public_Lands
Five people are using handtools to build a hiking trail on a snowy day. The work being done in this photo is the end stage of a long process. The property owner, in this case the Indiana DNR, contacted the HHC to see if we would build a trail on some recently acquired property. A few members met with the property manager to determine the length of the trail, areas to include and avoid, and the general layout of the trail. Over the next several weeks, groups of members laid out the trail first by hanging surveyor's tape from tree branches every 30 to 50 feet (10 to 15 m) and then by placing pin flags every 6 feet (2 m) or so telling the trail building volunteers where to construct the trail. Working on the third Saturday of the month, plus a few extra days for chainsaw work, it took us about 18 months to complete this trail. A mother mountain goat and her baby were attracting a lot of attention at the viewpoint near the visitor center. The mother is wearing a tracking collar. The short trail from the center to the viewpoint offers some of the biggest scenic bang for the least effort buck of almost anywhere we've hiked as well as close, but not too close, encounters with the residents of the park.

Buckskin Gulch in the Paria Canyon - Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness Area is one of our favorite places to hike in Utah. The way the light changes over time means that the canyon never looks the same way twice. #photography #Utah #geology #Support_Public_Lands
Water from summer monsoons over eons of time has carved a slot canyon into the sandstone in this area along the Arizona - Utah border. Both the canyon and its walls are sinuous. There are many places where sunlight only reaches the floor for a few minutes a day. The combination of deep shadows and desert varnish gives a bluish cast to the red rocks.

The layer cake of southern #Utah 's #geology is on display along highway US 163 near Mexican Hat. #photography
This is a photo of various layers of rocks. There are pale gray/green and red shales, along with red/brown cliffs of several different sandstone formations. From the bottom to the top of this photo is a height of well over 1,000 feet (300 m). One of the things we love about traveling an hiking on the Colorado Plateau is that the geology is easily seen. In this photo some of the layers seem to be out of order to my geologically untrained eye. That usually means a fault has caused the usual order of the strata to have shifted.

This ornate courthouse was completed in 1876 and was designed by Indianapolis architects Edwin May and Adolf Scherrer. The courthouse is a three story cream colored limestone structure. The building is located on the landscaped grounds of the Courthouse Square in the center of Vincennes. The north front has three arches on the first story with arched balconies on the second and third stories. The walls are elaborately carved and ornamented with marble statues in appropriate niches, representing General George Rogers Clark, the Goddess of Liberty and a Federal soldier, and also two monumental tablets of marble on the front of the building. On the northwest corner is a high square tower with clock and square cupola at the top.

For the first time since the night of January 24, there is no snow on our deck. Still a lot of snow on the ground but the first things to be completely snow-free were the covers on the septic tank. Ah, feel the warmth of biological processes. 🌞

The photo shows the wonderful craftsmanship of both the iron work and stone work of Inigo Jones's Tulip Stairs. The interlocking stairs support each other and that can be seen in the puzzle-like way the stairs fit together at the egdes. The flower designs are called tulips, but I've read that they are more likely modeled after lilies.

Surprised by a selfie #photography #architectural_detail #street_photography #reflection
A few weeks ago I was walking down the main street in Columbus, Indiana and noticed a nicely painted detail that I'd passed by dozens of time without seeing it. The detail has 3 medalions painted red. Each one has leaves above and below them. There are several old buildings on this street with cast iron decorative work. Some of it was done by the George Mesker company in Evansville. When I was processing this photo I realized that in addition to the late 19th century court house I had captured a mid 20th century photographer.

A malamutt with a big smile is standing between two trees and looking happily in the camera because among other reason there is snow on the ground and she loved it. Long curly leaves off a bent over stem are covered in snow and ice and one of them is has thick curl of ice following its shape.

Yesterday asked me for a photo with an unusual perspective that she could use for her watercolor class. This one we agreed was too difficult for her skill level but it met & exceeded the requirement.

This is a shot in the Pantheon in Paris. I am shooting down at the mirror in the floor to get a reflection of the roof and the pendulum that swings across the mirror. This is an exact copy of the pendulum that Foucault used to show the physics of earth's movements at the Pantheon in 1851. The original pendulum is at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris.

I happened to look up when passing a church in Columbus, Indiana that I frequently photograph and noticed that the steeple was pointing to the moon in the mid afternoon. I liked the odd angle, the rough bricks, and the details of the finial and the millwork of the steeple against a very slightly milky blue sky. The colors were less interesting than the shapes and lines so I changed it to black and white.

I could have called this photo from 17 winters ago "Me and My Shadow," but Bebo couldn't carry a tune. A brown dog with white markings and her shadow are prancing on the edge of a lake where in warmer weather they loved to run and splash in the water. She was not a swimmer but was a great splasher.
