120+ years of good years and not so good years are in the tree rings. The story of the stump is in the ALT. #photography #trees
This is the stump of a tree that was blown down and then cut by a mechanical timber harvester. The tree rings, alternating light and dark bands, show up clearly. I still need to go back to the stump to get an accurate count to determine the age of the tree. We had a wind storm last March that damaged or destroyed over 60 of the trees in one small section of our woods. I can't tell from the stump if it was a red or white oak. There were several of both species near this tree. We had a logger come in and do a salvage operation to allow us access to that part of the forest again and open up areas new growth. Based on past experience, tulip poplars will probably be the pioneer species in our forest succession. I'll add an accurate count of the tree rings and the species in a reply later today.

Snowy day yesterday looked pretty but didn't amount to much in accumulation (maybe an inch). It's going to be well above freezing today so it will all be gone soon. Flit enjoyed it.

My mother met my father when he was in training in Indianapolis during World War II. Thus, my remembrance for the U.S. #VeteransDay always starts on a personal note with this photo of their wedding day.
This is a 1943 black-and-white photo of my mother in a pretty street dress standing next to my father who is wearing an army uniform. They look young (21 and 22) and a maybe a tiny bit stunned. They got married just months before he was sent to the European battleground as a medic.

Magenta dogwood leaves are in focus in this photo. They stand out against an out of focus background of yellow-green and greeny-yellow beech leaves. It looks like nature took its inspiration from some old websites where a text box was in one color and the text in it was in a clashing color.

The road is covered with brown leaves. The yellow leaves on the trees are mostly on beeches and a few young tulip poplars. The orange leaves are on oaks. There is a mix of white oaks, scarlet oaks, black oaks, and chestnut oaks in that part of the forest. We have had two storms in the nearly 50 years that we've lived here that have done so much damage that we had to have logging done to make the woods safe for us and our dogs to enjoy. One was 8 years ago, and the second was this past March. This road was used both times to bring the logs out of the woods.

Going to get temps in the mid-20s (F) Sunday and Monday night. Time to bring the herbs in. I know the basil won't make it and the parsley and chives are already struggling but the sage and rosemary made through the winter indoors last year and are still looking pretty good.

Over time water has eroded the sandstone into sinuous scalloped shapes in the Shawnee National Forest, in southern Illinois. There are ripples and reflections in the small pools.

This has been a weird fall. The red was plentiful & bright but the yellow have been muted & there hasn't been much orange. The big thing is there's still a huge amount of green. I found a same spot comparison taken 1 day difference in dates but 2013 (l) vs 2025 (r).

Clifty Falls in Clifty Falls State Park is viewed from a distance with the creek feeding the falls and the rock wall bounding it visible but the falls are overshadowed by the vivid fall colors encircling it, reds, oranges, yellows, and a bit of green. The parks has four major falls, a bat cave, Ohio river overlooks, and excellent hiking trails.

This is one of the many waterfalls we visited. This waterfall is flowing through the largely maple and beech forest. It has a multi tiered cascaded before a 10-15 foot drop. Tree trunks and large limbs across and along the falls and stream are evidence of heavier flows.
