Over time water has eroded the sandstone into sinuous scalloped shapes in the Shawnee National Forest, in southern Illinois. There are ripples and reflections in the small pools.

This is one of the many waterfalls we visited. This waterfall is flowing through the largely maple and beech forest. It has a multi tiered cascaded before a 10-15 foot drop. Tree trunks and large limbs across and along the falls and stream are evidence of heavier flows.

Along the Fourth of July Creek in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, bright pink fireweed and other plants are taking advantage of sunlight and growing rapidly after a wild fire. They stand out in contrast to the blackened trunks of lodgepole pines.

The ridge line of the mountains on the east side of Lake McDonald is the dark area at the bottom of the photo. Above the mountains is a layer of clouds in shadow. Those clouds are topped by another layer brightened and warmed by the light of the setting sun.

The sunshine is coming from behind these cattails. That backlighting sets the green leaves and the seed fluff aglow. This photo was taken in the fall of 2018 when the cattails were starting the next generation of these fresh water plants.

The bark of this cottonwood is gray-brown and deeply furrowed. This one is nearly 40 inches (1 m) in diameter at breast height and nearly 100 feet (30 m) tall.

This road through the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument⁩, ⁨Utah⁩, ⁨is an amazing drive with many trailheads for some of our favorite hikes. The land, from the Navajo sandstone in the foreground to the laccolith Henry Mountain Range on the left side in the distance, was some of the last land in the lower 48 states of the U.S. to be mapped. The Monument and the surrounding national parks have been places we've loved to hike for over 30 years. ALT - This photo is the top quarter to third of a very tall waterfall. The water makes an initial drop and then hits a ledge that causes it to appear to leap into the air before continuing the rest of the drop. I was focusing on that tremendous splash. But I didn't pay enough attention to how much I had polarized the shot. The sky which was a deep sky blue came out closer to navy blue. I liked the shot though so I decided to see what it looked like as a black and white, and you are seeing the result.

The Liesegang rings in this photo look sort of like eyes staring out of the rock. There are two central shapes with somewhat concentric rings around them. The rock is rusty red and brown and has gray patches of lichen and green patches of moss. The whole thing looks like an abstract painting. One of the most interesting things about Liesegang rings is that the process that creates them is not understood. The hike to Third Vault Falls, ‎⁨Fundy National Park⁩, ⁨New Brunswick⁩, ⁨Canada⁩, is an easy walk through a mixed hardwood and conifer forest. And then you get to the point where the trail drops down to the bottom of the falls. #photography #Support_Public_Lands #WaterfallWednesday
Third Vault Falls drops into a pool and then cascades into another small pool. The reflection of the falls is in this small pool. The waterfall is framed by maples and other trees going through early autumn color changes from green to yellow-green.

The photo shows hikers coming up and going down the trail, but the focus of the photo is on the trail itself. The trail has been built into the Navajo sandstone walls of Zion Canyon. In some places the trail's switchbacks had to be built by constructing ramps from one level to the next using the native stone.

The area around Mammoth Lakes, California is part of the geologically active Long Valley Caldera. This photo looks like it shows the aftermath of 2 volcanic eruptions. On the right the tan colored rock looks like it might be volcanic tuff. It also looks like it has been fractured by other eruptions or earthquakes. The red rock on the left looks like it is part of a cinder cone. Other than the location of the photo and the color of the rocks, everything I just typed is a guess.

An approximately 3 inch (7 cm) sea urchin shell is resting on a bed of small green heather-like plants. The urchin was about 100 feet (30 m) away from the sea and well above the tide line. The urchin's shell is composed of an intricate and symmetrical pattern of bumps and holes. Some of its pale green tube feet are still attached. After doing some searching, I found there are two species of green sea urchins that are common in the waters around Iceland Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis and Psammechinus miliaris. I don't know which this one is.

This is a photo of the final plunge of Gullfoss into the narrow canyon the Hvítá River is carving. The sound is deafening, and the spray billows over a hundred feet into the air covering part of the trail leading to the overlooks. The falls was preserved largely though the efforts of Sigríður Tómasdóttir and is now a conservation area owned by the Icelandic government.
