I was strongly moved by this story by Pamela Gordon of @theguardian.com, about a boy put into foster care by his mother at age 13, who grew into a man who couldn't/didn't learn how to live in society without trouble. Social services didn't help (enough).

When I met Craig he was 13 and homeless. I still thought his life might turn around. I was tragically wrong
The long read: I knew he was running away from something. It wasn’t until many years later that I discovered the truth

If you take cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins, you may have noticed a flurry of news coverage since late October about an extensive recall of thousands of bottles of atorvastatin, the generic version of Lipitor. (@us.theconversation.com)

I understand this is a luxury with everything going on in this country and around the world, but I'm struggling to finish a book recommended by a friend for my annual October scary read. I'm 3/4 of the way through & I'm determined to finish it, but Interview with the Vampire is a slog.

“They” is not a “made-up pronoun.” It has been in use since the 13th century. And has been used by the likes of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen.

“Them" is also not a “made-up pronoun.” It has been in constant usage since before the 12th century.

It's weird how Tylenol caused autism (first diagnosed in 1943) before it was even invented (1955). What a clever drug.

Also people keep asking me if I find AI translation helpful in my work and AI TRANSLATION IS NOWHERE NEAR COMMERCIAL QUALITY and NO I DON'T EDIT AI TRANSLATION BECAUSE IT'S MUCH FASTER FOR ME TO JUST DO THE ACTUAL TRANSLATION THAN EDIT CRAP because PAINTING CRAP WITH GOLD DOESN'T TURN CRAP INTO GOLD
Someone recently wrote a book using ChatGPT and emailed it to me, asking if it's any good, as if I would ever waste a second of my time reading it? Why are people so shameless? Why do people want to be seen as "writers" so much? Why can't they use AI to get a lucrative job in coding instead?
Just received a blanket pitch from a children's book author (sent, presumably, to many indie bookstores) pitching a clearly AI-illustrated book. In the interest of public service, this was my response. I'm fucking done with being nice to these people.

If you, regular person, did anything like this after a fatal car accident, you would be prosecuted for a variety of crimes, including insurance fraud.

If you then repeatedly lied to the courts about it, like Tesla did, you'd get prosecuted for that too, plus stiff monetary sanctions.
“.. Within about three minutes of the crash, the Model S uploaded a “collision snapshot”—video, CAN‑bus streams, EDR data, etc.—to Tesla’s servers .. The vehicle then deleted its local copy, resulting in Tesla being the only entity having access.”

They’re planning on building a detention center for migrants in the middle of the fetid swamps of Florida.

If you think this is something new, the first internment camp they sent me and my family to in 1942 was a barbed wire prison called Rohwer. It was located in the swamps of Arkansas.

Tesla's Supervised Robotaxi launch was a pathetic flop.

Tesla's Supervised Robotaxi launched yesterday to much acclaim from the Tesla Cult. Since nobody who was at the event has properly summarized the first day, we thought we would do it.

Below are our findings. 🧵

Talking about the future is a form of protest. Reading is a form of protest. Giving yourself a fucking break is a form of protest. It's time to rise up, however we can. That's what this episode of @ouropinions.bsky.social is all about.
Let's take to the streets! Our new episode is about protests in science fiction & fantasy — and why protests are so vital in battling authoritarianism.

Plus we talk to @andrecarrington.bsky.social about his incredible new book, The Black Fantastic.

Loved the first half of tonight’s SF Symphony concert. I was already a fan of Gabriela Montero’s piano concerto No. 1. It had more resonance after hearing her speak about her intentions before the performance. I also liked Gabriela Ortiz’s “Antrópolis,” a tour of the antros of Mexico City.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.
