Here's a graphic from the Stevenson and Wolfers introductory economics textbook. (It's a point of pride for me that no other textbook insists on this level of numeracy before presenting macro data.)

One simple lesson that should be the starting point of any course in macroeconomics is understanding the difference between millions, billions and trillions, and more importantly, what they actually mean in human terms.

As you ponder the likely consequences of the new steel tariffs, it's worth asking:
A. How long does it take to build a steel mill?
B. How long do you expect Trump's new 50% steel tariff to last?

If A>B, then how can you expect any lasting gains from these tariffs?
