"Social media addiction" is the result of corporations and boomer parents robbing people of any other meaningful way to socialise from the moment they're born. Any public official advocating restricting social media knows this on either a subconscious or conscious level.

I've been thinking a lot about that bumper sticker which says "everything looks like a conspiracy theory when you don't understand how anything works" and folks it's pretty obvious to me that the people in power right now have absolutely no desire to understand how anything works.

People really think it’s authoritarian to not be able to publish things like “global warming isn’t real” and “vaccines are bad”. Like somehow the right to ideologically manipulate the public into believing in non reality for financial benefit is some kind of intrinsic “good”

They’re banning TikTok not because it harvests data, the same way US social media does, but because they can’t influence it’s algorithm with congressional hearings or government contracts the way they do every other tech giant. That’s it.
