A tangle of green is the first impression of this forest shot: the ground is covered with soft green grass and moss, and the dark trunks of the trees are lumpy and bumpy as they twist towards the sky. The canopy is shadowy green and the sky peeking through the trees is overcast.

'A Lake View.' Akseli Gallen-Kallela spent the winter of 1905 by Lake Keitele in Konginkangas, in Middle Finland. The far looming island can be seen as one variation from the theme 'island of dreams,' a familiar subject in the history of art.

#ourworldiswonderful; Merry Yuletide everyone. We've had no snow this winter, but I thought I'd add a touch of seasonality to today's offering, so I've added this one from Dec 2021. The other is from today's walk in the Forest of Dean.

A narrow path leads toward the distance, running out from the shadows of the near trees into the brightness of early morning sunlight further away.

11 Cambrian fossils from the Great Basin.

The Great Basin is a large area of Utah and Nevada that was under water 500 million years ago. Life was experimenting and there's lots of strange creatures found here.
