i don’t think it’s realistic to ask people being targeted due to their ethnicity and national origin not to engage in displays of ethnic and national pride

I think Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem is probably a tough sell for Holy Father 2025, but agree that Pope Pizzaballa would cause the Internet to spontaneously combust, taking down the grid worldwide in a spasm of joy
Can we please all just get behind this man? It would heal our world.

Whoever you are, if you think the fascists won’t turn on you, too, you are a hopeless rube. Fascists are for crushing, not debating.
the very next post in this thread is "not even her lawyer knows where she is" and if you think they're gonna stop with non-citizens, I think in a year or two you're gonna be proven very wrong
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

1) The rate of sepsis rose more than 50%

2) they don’t break down data by race here—we need that info (generally BW’s maternal death rate is 3x that of WW, Native W is 2x)

3) they looked at hospital data. So missing greatest cause of pregnant/postpartum death: Murder. Abuse skyrockets w/pregnancy.
Dozens more pregnant and postpartum women have died in Texas hospitals since the state banned abortion, our analysis shows.

As the maternal mortality rate dropped nationally, it rose in Texas by 33%.
Texas Banned Abortion. Then Sepsis Rates Soared.
ProPublica’s first-of-its-kind analysis is the most detailed look yet into a rise in life-threatening complications for women experiencing pregnancy loss under Texas’ abortion ban.

If your excuse as an elected official, here in 2025, for not doing something that is in the interest of Dems who elected you is that Republicans might weaponize it, you are not living in 2025. They are going to weaponize anything you do, either way. They have demonstrated this over and over.

So ICE has effectively disappeared a student for protesting Israel's genocide, separating him from his 8 month pregnant wife. Pure fascism
UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

governments should spend money, literally all their fucking money. on taking care of the people from whom they got the money. on building cool shit for the people from whom they got the money to use, like highways and public works. this is real easy

how can these people be so bad at this
We should reject outright the framing that the answer is to cut spending, that it needs to be cut. Even giving in to that is playing into conservatives’ hands, letting them set the edges of the debate.
Welker to Slotkin: "Democrats were in charge for four years. You were in Congress at the time. Why didn't Democrats do more to cut government spending when they were in charge?"

once again I have to invoke the specter of Ronald Wilson Reagan, who is in Hell now. under Reagan, the term "government spending" was effectively demonized. fuck you, Reaganite ghouls! spending money, on its people and their needs, is the function of government! public works are good! say so!

I think about this from @naomiaklein.bsky.social a lot. "Conspiracy theorists get the facts wrong but often get the feelings right." The sense that people are gaining wealth from human suffering while concealing reality is valid, but the root problem isn't evil people but the nature of capitalism.

The confusion surrounding which or how many federal buildings the Trump administration plans to off-load underscores the broader chaos that has accompanied its plunge into an effort to shrink the federal government, leaving agencies scrambling to make sense of the rapidly changing information.
How 443 federal properties were targeted for sale, then suddenly weren’t
The Trump administration posted a list of properties eligible for sale, then shortened it and finally removed it altogether, causing confusion across the government.

If, for example, Trump says nobody is allowed to dance, on penalty of death, he has no legal power to make that declaration and no power to enforce it, but if everyone stops dancing it's as good as if he did. Reporting as though Trump has these powers helps give him those powers.
