i find it distasteful that the vatican would use trans people for their pr in this way while having spearheaded the anti-trans backlash over the last 2 decades. and also because of all the negative comments pope francis made about trans life

Most allies in my life are guilty of not getting out and voting, or calling out transphobia when they see it.
Being that the voices of cis het people are taken far more seriously when it comes to our basic bodily autonomy, speaking up is more important than ever.

It's so easy to say you support trans people. Actively supporting them is different. Actively supporting them means calling out transphobia. Challenging bans to healthcare ect. That is true support. Anything else is just virtue signaling!
