Many workers are treated unjustly, earn unlivable wages, and experience unsafe working conditions. Much progress has been made, but there is still work to be done, especially in the context of poorer nations. Corporations and the rich want to roll back worker protections to maximize their profits. We know how workers are treated without adequate regulations: like disposable cogs in a machine. In the United States, before the New Deal Era ushered in by Franklin D. Roosevelt, there was no minimum wage, social security, widespread pension plans, rural electric cooperatives, or federally insured bank deposits. Pre-1930s, workers were often injured or died due to inadequate safety standards and union-busting was the norm. Workers were expected to stay on the job for long hours often exceeding 12 hours a day and children were part of the labor force. Should we allow the wealthy to reverse progress and return to such a time? The answer is no. Do not allow your rights to be taken away. They were fought for by brave people throughout history, and they must be protected by the brave people of today. Rights must be safeguarded after they are won, or they will be at risk of withering away. Workers' rights are human rights.
