After 99 years, Michigan clockmaker Howard Miller is shutting down. The culprit: Trump's tariffs.

"If the federal government had said, ‘Oh, it's a 10% tariff, constant,' … they might've worked things out," an employee said. "But no. It's just chaos."

In Congress, He Said Tariffs Were Bad for Business. As Trump’s Ambassador to Canada, He’s Reversed Course.
Pete Hoekstra once testified that “the market should dictate the price of steel, not the government.” But he now champions the Trump trade policies that are being linked to job losses in his former Mi...

Study shows people who rely on AI for their work are 8x less likely to fully comprehend or remember what they have “written” than people who bothered to do it themselves. Folks, use AI wisely, not as a crutch!

If you are still on X, at least do yourself the favor of being REALLY skeptical of the posts there from anyone other than your personal friends. Avoid being rage baited by phony accounts, it isn’t worth your time
X rolled out a new feature overnight showing where accounts are based. This network of “Trump-supporting independent women” that claimed to be “real Americans” are based in Thailand.

The photos were stolen from European models & posts pushed pro-Trump lines while targeting Islam and LGBTQ people.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

$143 million in taxpayer money has gone to a mysterious company created just days before it got the money to create a Homeland Security ad campaign starring the deeply corrupt Kristi Noem. A firm with close ties to Noem is secretly cashing in on the deal, according to ProPublica.

The company is run by the husband of Noem’s chief DHS spokesperson and has personal and business ties to Noem and her aides. DHS invoked the “emergency” at the border to skirt competitive bidding rule...

As a recently minted expat, can confirm the sentiments I hear from others in this 🧵
NEW from me:

Political hostility, high visa fees and (in the case of the UK) stagnant incomes are making the UK and US less attractive destinations for top international talent.

That steep decline in the appeal of moving to the US after 2016 is 👀

Warn your elderly relatives - AI is set to help fraudsters develop more effective phishing scams. Built-in safeguards completely failed in this experiment
We asked major AI chatbots to help craft a phishing scam. They did. From fake charities to urgent pleas, the bots delivered. This investigation shows how generative AI is fueling fraud — and why it’s so hard to stop. Read our findings here: reut.rs/3K400yU

They gave DC baseball one magical year in 2019 but it has been a lot of frustration ever since. Despite a small core of talent the blame for subpar 2020 onwards goes to ownership who played MoneyBall with nickels and dimes. Wish the best for Rizzo and Martinez wherever they land next.

Cancer drug Revlimid has its origin in a pill that cost patients $7.50 each.

Decades later, Revlimid costs more than $18,000 for a month’s supply...

Even though it still only costs about 25 cents to manufacture.

This is the content I came here for! Deep dive on how Big Apple search for industrial fruit has screwed up yet another delicious seasonal treat. Next do Indian River grapefruits!
This is a fantastic article that answers so many questions. What happens when you try to turn a necessarily seasonal apple bred for flavour into a year-round commodity apple like Gala or Red Delicious? You lose everything that made it good in the first place.
I’ve had bad luck with Honeycrisps for the past few years and thought maybe I was just doing something wrong, but it’s not just me! Honeycrisp apples have been getting Red Delicious-ified!

They also had fewer ER visits, nights spent in a hospital, and jail stays.

The report estimates that this reduction in public service use SAVED the city $589k.
