This is harder with RPGs than other entertainments because what the local community players has such a bearing on what the hobby realistically is *for you*.

I think every planet and every star system has their own clock and calendar and that's one of the many things people keep droids around for.

That's certainly not universal. We have two game shops selling RPGs in Edinburgh and both have two bookcases of RPGs and only one shelf of D&D.
5e might still be big, but I think the non-D&D parts of the hobby are bigger and healthier than they have ever been too.
