thought it was another good game from the Hutson/Struble pairing last night. they've actually been really good together this season. only 170 minutes at 5v5, but the xG differential is really good. goals are +8/-7 in MTL's favour with them on the ice and that's with a .950 PDO.

MTL has played 35 games since that 9-2 loss to Pittsburgh in mid-December. Since that point, they have the 2nd-most road games (20), T-4th for B2B games (7), and the 6th-hardest schedule by opponent pts%. In that time, they are 19th by both shot attempt and xG share at 5v5, and 18th by goal share.

100% fine with the Habs holding on to their UFAs. They have a pile of 2nd-4th round picks over the next couple years anyway and I think it’s worth it for management to let this group try to earn a playoff spot. Whether they do or don’t, I think that’s more important than a couple more 3rd rounders

I know he's only played 435 minutes at even strength this year, but is Emil Heineman the next Marcus Foligno? Some people are asking this

Habs have the top ranked skater prospect in Demidov and the second ranked goalie prospect in Fowler according to Scott. Things are looking good.

Dobes also made the top goalie prospect list.

of this is fun.
was looking through the tracking at AllThreeZones to look for a comp to Slafkovský's last 2 years. by playmaking data (scoring chance assists, high-danger passes) and defensive zone data (DZ touches, DZ retrievals, and zone exits), two names came up: Sebastian Aho and Sam Reinhart

The habs are a real Jekyll and Hyde team. Started as an absolute mess, two months being the best team in the NHL and back to being an absolute mess.

MTL plays 22 games from the X-Mas break to the 4 Nations break, and 18 are against teams either in a playoff spot, or fighting for one (like VAN/NYR). By opp. pts%, it's the 4th-hardest schedule in the league. With 15 games played, MTL is 10-3-2, so they're guaranteed a .500 pts% with 7 games left

It’ll be interesting to see Rantanen away from Mack. His numbers w/o Mack aren’t great but Aho is no slouch either.

Also, Necas should have a nice glow up if he can find chemistry with Mack.

Fun trade. I think this makes it more likely Rantanen will hit the open market making for a fun July 1st.
Copied from my post at The Bad Place

We'll start with @hockeyviz.com

Interestingly, Necas/Rantanen are minus play-drivers while Hall/Drury are positive.

The value gap is all from production (finishing/setting) and penalty±.

In all. It's two back-end top-liners and two middle-6ers. Even trade.

Jakub Dobes has been lights out for the Montreal Canadiens, starting the year off 5-0-0.

The timing has allowed Cayden Primeau to continue building confidence in the AHL – but for Dobes, he has shown he's not afraid of anything.

Great article on Slafkovsky. Him putting all of the pieces together and becoming a great top 6 forward is crucial for the habs to take the next step. We’ve seen he can do it over long stretches already but the consistency has to be there. Have to remember he doesn’t turn 21 until March too.
Slafkovsky n’est pas un fan du ‘dompage’ de rondelle, il l’admet ouvertement, mais il sait que de mieux s’aligner à ce que demande l’entraîneur est la voie à suivre pour retrouver le succès.

Habs have 4 more points than the Isles but Dom’s model is giving the Islanders a 21% more chance to make the playoffs than the habs.

Habs are tied with Ottawa and 4 back of Boston. Obviously his model isn’t a believer but the habs have been better lately. Should be a fun second half.
