This week I got annoyed about people using "what can we really know about the past" as an excuse for bad history in media. So I wrote about how historians know things about the past and how this has changed over time.

If you liked this I hope you will share and subscribe!

Were you there? The case for knowing things about the past
Imagine you are watching a movie set in the Middle Ages. Something seems off so you dutifully Google "movie + historical accuracy," giving you plenty of results that emphasize the mistakes in the film...

Officially graduated! And I've written my thesis about no one other than Flavius Belisarius, the figure that sparked my interest in Byzantine History. You can read my thesis here:

This thesis analyses how the 6th-century general Belisarius was commemorated in Byzantine cultural memory through Assmann’s concept of cultural memory, from descriptions of Belisarius’ lifetime until ...

Here is a rather lovely raised/embossed #scabbard from a Mainz-type #gladius found at Valkenburg (NLD). Its similarities to the Fulham scabbard are not surprising, given the possible links of Valkenburg with the British invasion of AD 43.

Something curious: Belisarius’ Wikipedia page says he probably died on his estates in Rouphinianai (Rufinianae) on the Anatolian side (Kadıköy). And his place of burial gets linked to a church in Beyoğlu? Let’s sort this out 🧵

Working on water heritage in Istanbul and mapping water infrastructure sometimes comes awfully close to Το αποχετευτικό σύστημα στο Βυζάντιο. Katakouzina would be proud. Also, I did find a book on dream interpretation in Byzantium in the library here.
