Update from the church in question this afternoon.
February 22, 2025 at 8:55 PM
It appears there are two SS Peter and Pauls here, with only the one on the European side having a linkable Wikipedia page. This is not particularly ‘near in the area’ of Rouphinianai on the Anatolian side. But: Karaköy and Kadıköy are easy to confuse! End.

If we look closer into the location of Rouphinianai, it brings us to Caddebostan (Kadıköy). According to the Oxford Dictionary, Rufinus built an ‘Apostoleion’ dedicated to Peter and Paul here. That definitely is a different church.

The page for the SS Peter and Paul church in question in Karaköy (Beyoğlu) makes no mention of any late antique events, save for the French page. This brings us to another debate if this 6th century church could be identified with Arap Camii.

First, the part that claims that ‘he was buried in a church nearby, perhaps SS Peter and Paul’ has no reference (blasphemy!).
February 22, 2025 at 7:26 AM
Something curious: Belisarius’ Wikipedia page says he probably died on his estates in Rouphinianai (Rufinianae) on the Anatolian side (Kadıköy). And his place of burial gets linked to a church in Beyoğlu? Let’s sort this out 🧵

Shoot, you're right!

Working on water heritage in Istanbul and mapping water infrastructure sometimes comes awfully close to Το αποχετευτικό σύστημα στο Βυζάντιο. Katakouzina would be proud. Also, I did find a book on dream interpretation in Byzantium in the library here.

Putting me in a building with a bookshop was a great idea. @metalclassicist.bsky.social I also bought the edited volume from which I read your chapter on metal and Byzantium!

Go from Istanbul to Ravenna? Worldcat suggests it's Renovatio Imperii time.

This is where I'm writing from next month... Istanbul is a city where you go for a walk to buy tomatosauce but end up at the Galata tower while buying books on the go

Time for a swim across the Channel?

Last Friday, as part of the annual Byzantine Studies Netherlands meeting, we were able to catch a unique glimpse of two manuscripts housed in the Allard Pierson Museum: an 11th century Menologion and a later edition of the Oracles of Leo (15th century?)
