From a friend who was there today: MIT class president denounced the MIT administration and said “we MIT students showed the world what we want is an end to Israeli military collaboration," the crowd erupted in chants of "free palestine," flags everywhere, they cut the livestream 🇵🇸

hi folks! I'm teaching tech ethics this summer, and part of the course is having students read news articles about ongoing tech issues.

can anyone recommend publications that cover tech issues in a non-US context (either issues in countries beyond the US and/or do not center the US)?

Addendum: whether DeepSeek or OpenAI, there's no such thing as AGI and attempting to build it results in harm.

See our paper.

Sharing tools I created in #p5xjs for creative coding basics for often explained concepts that lacked demos. With AI, blending ideas is now easier. I am going to try with my students in class today.

This is one of the biggest design flaws of this app: it’s all in the clear. That’s design for people who don’t have security and privacy concerns, not design for all. I’ve run the studies myself and it’s clear: visibility controls are the #1 way to help marginalized folks protect themselves online

ICYMI, last week I posted the icebreaker activity I did with my first day of my course on data literacy of/by/for the humanities. Had the students make a dataset about themselves and go through the steps of organizing, questioning, and analyzing it.
Taught the first day of "Data for the Rest of Us" and tried an activity I'm calling "We Data." Students construct datasets about themselves in small groups and look for stories in the spreadsheet. A good icebreaker and introduction to the themes of the course. More here:

I’m going through and saving some of my favorite tiktoks before leaving that app and something that I think is underarticulated about the value of TikTok is that it just makes me like other people more. Like look at these beautiful humans doing human things.

The idea that a president can issue an executive order that overrides Congress, while it may be appealing to everyone who wants TikTok back and agrees that the TikTok ban is a first amendment violation, is actually illegal dictator shit

idk I feel like the government shutting down a very popular app due to how widely we were able to access information concerning a hushed genocide should be alarming to everybody regardless of your interest in using the app yourself

It’s nearly impossible to explain to non disabled people the hope we had at the beginning of the pandemic.

Hope for inclusion & accommodation. For better awareness & treatment of chronic illness.

Having that hope ripped away and replaced with increasing ableism, eugenics & hatred? Its devastating
Remember when the pandemic began and everyone started accommodating remote work? Everyone began showing brand new movies and live concerts streaming? Disabled people had been fighting for this for decades. Now it’s all taken away. It’s not that they can’t accommodate us, they just don’t want to.
