Donald Trump is astonished that Norway is vastly wealthy, the richest Government in the world, because of the North Sea oil and gas, but the UK with the same North Sea is poor

I'll cure his astonishment it is because it has been completely privatised in the UK, and not in Norway

There is no education happening if all that's involved is typing a question into AI.
There is no intellectual advancement if you're letting AI think for you.

🧵 Must read. #AtlasNetwork partners were boasting in an Australian parliamentary hearing & emails about their destruction of climate action in Australia. They claimed it. They were triumphant, arrogant about the law not forcing them to reveal donors. #auspol

Research should not be hidden behind for-profit paywalls. Universities should not have to pay $30 million for work we’ve done for free.

The irony here is that academics don’t just write the articles for free—we also referee and edit for them for free. Something is deeply broken.

“New Zealand's eight universities spent $30-million a year on journal licences and about half of that sum went to Elsevier.

One New Zealand university told its staff all universities in New Zealand and Australia would "lose some degree of access" to the publisher's 1600 titles from the start of next year.

It's destroying any joy there was in marking assignments.

It creates distrust between educator and student (both directions) because some are using it to write assignments or mark essays, so you need to be vigilant with ALL.

Most importantly, it's reducing critical thinking and writing skills!
Can I quietly ask we stop talking about what "AI" *could* do in education and identify instead what's actually happening with AI in education? I'll start...

AI in education is causing students anxiety as they have no idea what institutions are doing about it, and nor do institutions know what students are doing with it

Climate breakdown is driven by a storm of lies. This lying is systemic, funded and coordinated, and operates across almost all media, old and new.
This week's column argues that we cannot fight the climate crisis without also fighting the epistemic crisis.

You put Paris back in,

FWIW, the best tech people I know are ones who genuinely are interested in the humanities and also grasp that there are those who know more than they do (this also applies to people in general).
My theory is that tech bros hate humanities because they've all tried once to impress a girl studding English Lit by talking about a book and they were all laughed at for their complete misreading of the text.

"Supporting net zero is a lot easier than defining it. The maths behind net zero is easy; in theory, if carbon removals from tree growth or carbon capture and storage match emissions, then net zero works.

But the problem isn’t the maths. It’s the biology, the economics and the bullshit." #auspol
