Peter Thiel is founding yet another company named after something from Middle Earth.

This time it’s a bank named Erebor, a reference to the mountain which holds Smaug’s piles of gold and treasure.

Start-up named after the dragon’s mountain in ‘Lord of the Rings’

I don't 'refuse to use' AI, I just don't use AI; in the same way that I don't shoplift, or plagiarise other people's books - it requires no effort of will, it's just not something I would think of doing
Bizarrely framed article about the people (all women) who ‘refuse to use AI’. And a #philosophy professor who says “The moment to opt out of #AI has already passed”. Oh well. That’s that then. 🤷‍♂️ #AIEthics www.bbc.com/news/article...
The people refusing to use AI
Worried about the environment and the loss of skills, some people are resisting the rise of AI.

The return to roman architecture guys are thinking too small. We should be elfmaxxing. We should be building gorgeous whimsical cities fully integrated into the natural world. We should live in Lothlórien and vacation in Rivendell. This is what they took from you

...I mean this is basically how I grew up, so, yes. 😅
@betweenhorizons.bsky.social built a ramshackle treehouse in the woods as a middle schooler that her parents didn’t know about. She pretended she was an elven queen. One night she fell asleep there and the police were out looking for her. She made it home fine but the mosquito bites were awful.

Update, I have started filling my little empty flower beds, and they aren't growing yet but I am checking every day to see if things are sprouting yet, and it fills me with so much joy to be making things beautiful at my little home.
When I get too overwhelmed by the Big Scary, I like to go outside and look at my little yard and my little empty flower beds and think about all the things I'm going to fill them with when the winter is over, and how beautiful my little home is going to be once I've moved all the way in.

This this this. It's Tolkien's deep love and reverence for the natural world that really move me, in his books. Yes, the characters are great and the storylines are powerful, but give me his love of trees, his description of the night, his long tribute to the natural world, first. 💘 #tolkien
yeah yeah "j.r.r. tolkien describing a tree" or whatever but the descriptions of scenery in lord of the rings are genuinely so good. like upsettingly, magically good. tearing-at-your-hair-because-you-want-to-write-like-that good. and it's like every third line

My doctor's office has old seasons of The Great British Bake Off playing on loop in their waiting room, and I gotta say, great choice. Truly 10/10. It makes me actually want to be here.

Okay #luinelle #tolkien friends - what can you tell me about Turkish influences in Tolkien's languages, particularly Black Speech? Someone commented on it to me recently, and I don't know anything about this - was his Black Speech influenced by Turkish, or is that a connection drawn after the fact?

A really easy way to check yourself is to ask “is this something Morgoth would do?” and if the answer is yes, don’t do it!

"Are you aware that the entire west wing and Astronomer's Tower are burning?"
"I thought they'd killed you. I lost my temper."

Okayyyyy so turns out Daine is me. I am Daine. Haha oops. #tortall #tamorapierce

Omg, Daine taking justice into her own hands, in Emperor Mage? Yes, girl. I *feel* you. Let's effing GO. #tortall #tamorapierce

Oh. My god.
No one is talking about how often 11 year old girls switch places with their twin brother to fulfill their forbidden dream of becoming a knight and if I’m being honest, it’s a Tortall shame.

Continuing in Tortall: I've now read Kel, Alanna, Aly, & am half through Daine's books. Kel will always be my favorite. But I'm realizing tht at age 10, I didn't *get* Alanna the way I do now. Kel informed much of my childhood, but I think Alanna is the spirit of my adulthood. #tortall #tamorapierce

The most terrifying thing I do every day is take a vitamin pill the size of the tower of Orthanc. I am not convinced that choking on it one of these days won't be how I die. Why can't we make it half the size and just take two?? -_-
