my controversial opinion on rpf is that rpf is the part of celebrity fandoms i actually have less ethical qualms about because it’s framed as fictional. the posting in the belief that instead of fantasies these are truths about these people that you are just correctly perceiving is more worrisome

for the record, i personally think the story would have been better suited as a whole to have celebrían in galadriel’s place, but for marketing reasons felt the need to anchor itself in characters that would be familiar to a standard viewer of the lord of the rings movies
i remember saying years ago that because of how they’d written elrond and galadriel relative to each other, nearly any way celebrían could be introduced would now probably feel like elrond was robbing the cradle to some extent but i could not have foreseen the degree to which they would go for that

i don’t have anything against coming out scenes but i think it’s much sexier when a character’s homosexuality is something everyone knows or suspects but no one is willing to acknowledge. ideally it should be an unmentionable open secret that the elf fucks ass

the idea that the iron throne wounds and poisons weak kings is interesting because it’s every legend of mystical relics knowing the hand of the true king but inverted as a horror, however, it’s both funny and confusing to me that hotd appears to set that up perfectly but never does much with it

ironically i always think you can tell there are very few labor unions in the united states from the way that lots of americans in favor of unions (and i am in favor of unions, to be clear) are really unaware of the legitimate problems and bad behavior within them because they’ve never seen one

certainly not the most serious thing wrong with the world but it did honestly surprise me to find out in adulthood that a lot of animal rescues are really not good organizations and are basically one or two people with an unsanitary number of dubiously kept animals in their house

personally i think the silmarillion has its exaggerated reputation for difficulty because the structure is understandably unfamiliar to people but when they say they struggled to get through it other people erroneously think that means it has really difficult prose or something

it’s not that midwestern people aren’t nice but as a southerner i always feel sort of gaslit by the whole midwest nice thing because they’re not effusive with any emotion so like you leave an interaction with a midwesterner with no idea if they like or hate you. it’s more like midwest kind reserve

i don’t trust any commentary on the gothic that can’t admit that ann radcliffe is not very good. i think sometimes people wheel her out just to sound knowledgeable and i think hm….and are we going to acknowledge that….to put it charitably….mysteries of udolpho is surely one of the books ever written
