for all his reputation as a deep lore writer, a lot of tolkien’s skill with disturbing elements is actually the refusal to explain further. something Terrible happens to characters and we are not given the comfort of knowing what something was, Things stalk in the night and are never explained, etc.

i think this is part of the reason he was genderbent so much in fanfiction in the hobbit movies era. like girls wanted to nail richard armitage thorin, for sure, but also that story just kind of makes a surprising amount of sense with bilbo as a woman
