I feel like I really missed out! The reading of Tolkien as a strict/snotty Catholic is so limiting, when there is so much evidence for him as a much more nuanced author with a much more complex view of humanity and the world.

Okayyyy I NEED part 3, this is the best discussion of Tolkien I've heard yet. The Gil-galad theories? Stunning. The sidebar into queer Tolkien? So good! I wish that I had been more aware of queer readings of Tolkien/his accepting of queerness back when I was studying this stuff seriously in college.

Though the author of this article hasn't read as much Tolkien as one might hope, before writing something like this, either! But at least they are falling into common and mostly harmless (pls don't hate me) mistakes of ignorance, and not wildly misconstruing the ENTIRE POINT of literally everything.

Anyone who looks at the Elves, calls them "humans who don't die" like Thiel does, and then follows that up by saying "why can't we be elves?" did NOT read the same Lord of the Rings that I did.

I also love the reference to people trying to "find a solution to death," as though death is somehow a problem. Bros never actually read any Tolkien, I'm convinced. 🤔

I appreciate that the subtitle of that article says they are getting all the wrong lessons from Tolkien. Because yes.

I need this podcast to come out twice a week, you're my don't-die-of-boredom-at-work listen 😅❤️
