A systematic review of disseminated HSV in pregnancy (including with HLH) - out now. Highlights non-specific symptoms of the disease in pregnancy & how an absence of lesions does not exclude HSV in the unwell, febrile pregnant patient.

Overview of the recommended management for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This schematic illustrates the approach to SLE treatment, with organ-specific therapies presented in separate boxes and stratified by disease severity. The order of the medications in each box does not indicate preference unless noted otherwise. Lupus nephritis treatment is addressed in the 2025 American College of Rheumatology Guideline for the Screening, Treatment, and Management of Lupus Nephritis. ABBREVIATIONS: ACLE, acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus; SCLE, subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus; CCLE, chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus; CNI, calcineurin inhibitor (cyclosporin or tacrolimus); HCQ, hydroxychloroquine; CQ, chloroquine; CCB, calcium channel blockers; IL-1 blockade, Interleukin-1 blockade; IS, immunosuppressive therapy; IV CYC, intravenous cyclophosphamide; IVIG, intravenous immunoglobulins; LCV, leukocytoclastic vasculitis; MPAA, mycophenolic acid analogs; NSAIDs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; PDE5i, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors; PLEX, plasma exchange. Importantly the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in menopausal females kept their monocytes looking ‘young’ and they had improved phagocytosis as compared to age matched controls. Highlighting the potential immune benefits of HRT.

In this paper we demonstrate that there is an increase in inflammatory monocytes with altered proteome in post-menopausal females, which is not observed with age in males. Phagocytosis is significantly decreased in post-menopausal as compared to pre-menopausal females.

I am so proud to say that our paper is now available at Aging Cell. There is a paucity of data as to how the menopause impacts your immune system, and the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the menopause on monocyte phenotype and function.
