the people you see on twitter, elon musk included, want you to be in constant fear

in reality the woman who rings you up at the store probably doesn't care at all. she is busy thinking about the end of her shift.

Do! Not! Like!

I nearly froze my hands off taking a few minutes to say goodbye to my
cousin before going into the subway, and it wasn’t nearly that cold. Eep.

I'd defend it for that reason and because I used to work a block away from where they shot a bunch of the San Francisco action sequences. =)

Thanks!

I guess an upside is that I could probably use all this bullshit as an excuse to break my lease before it ends in March 2027.

If that doesn't happen today, I'm seriously considering demanding that building management give me the lawyer's contact info so I can call him myself and offer to pay the difference. Because this shit triggers my anxiety hard.

The super is now trying to get the building management to either make the lawyer set the heat higher or compensate the lawyer for the higher bill. God willing there'll be a resolution today, before it gets obscenely cold this weekend.

Sooooo the empty office below me isn't technically vacant. It's a lawyer's office, but he hasn't used it in person since covid kicked off and now lives in Florida. When the super turned the heat up, this lawyer eventually got a higher utility bill and freaked out, demanding the heat get turned down.

And don’t get me started on how “fun” it is to walk barefoot into the bathroom to find the floor tiles at 50f/10c. I know I’m ranting, and I’m not sure if this situation technically violates NYC’s heat law for apartments, but fuuuuuuuuck.
February 6, 2026 at 1:33 PM
Just as an illustration: Saturday morning, it was 14f/-10c outside. When I got home early evening yesterday, it was 32f/0c outside. I had the heat set the same both times. It was like 4-5f/2-3c warmer in here on Saturday morning.

Yes, my apartment is comparatively cheap for its location, amenities, and size, but come the fuck on. A nontrivial chunk of my theoretical savings on rent are eaten up by paying for my own heat, and having to heat it enough to balance out the frozen void downstairs is kinda insane.

I texted the super last evening, texting again at 9am, and will call him if I haven’t heard anything by noon. That office is going to be vacant forever and they’re gonna keep doing this.

This does mean I'm going to four movies (Reds, Goodbar, Wuthering Heights, Little Drummer Girl) in five days, but that is inherently a good thing!
February 5, 2026 at 10:04 PM
She insisted I see Looking for Mr Goodbar in the Diane Keaton series over the next two weeks, and who am I to argue?

Also, "Maiden" capitalized always makes think "Maidenform".

I basically bully @deepcooley.com into a video call when I do my nails, because I am constitutionally unable to stop trying to tape, open things, etc while waiting for the nails to dry.
