Ironically, one thing I truly missed throughout my PhD years is, to read, not scientific manuscripts obviously, but genuine, heartfelt stories, long or short, about people and their lives, lived or imagined, describing the human experience at some place, some point in time.

And in every country with authoritarian rule, they destroyed public education first, exactly for this reason… sadly, it worked.

ok Im not pissed only bc Sean Baker is obviously and clearly a great guy. Also I haven’t seen Anora yet but I bet it’s great. Based on his acceptance speech I expect nothing short of exceptional filmmaking.

I am curious what it would take for Europe to fund a much more robust defense structure without overly cutting into the welfare state. What does that look like? It’s not money printer go brr, so what are the plausible directions?

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.
