Civil contempt? Order to show cause!
Losing the sound a bit but Boasberg remains incredulous at the fact that the government won't even tell him why they won't tell him how many flights took off. DOJ says all he can say is that the flights took off before his order, and he suggests that's not relevant to compliance.

3 minutes in and a shit show already
Boasberg gets the DOJ to confirm the 5 individual named plaintiffs, which were the subject of his first TRO, are still here.

Boasberg asks "How many planes departed the US at any point on Saturday carrying any people being deported solely on the basis of the proclamation."

DOJ refuses to answer!!

Ironically, one thing I truly missed throughout my PhD years is, to read, not scientific manuscripts obviously, but genuine, heartfelt stories, long or short, about people and their lives, lived or imagined, describing the human experience at some place, some point in time.

And in every country with authoritarian rule, they destroyed public education first, exactly for this reason… sadly, it worked.
Walz: I think they hate public education because it’s easier to run an authoritarian government if you don’t have a population that knows.

He provoked us to anger and action. This is from the Normal Heart, his play: “It’s happened before. It’s all happened before. History is worth shit. I swear to God I now understand… Is this how so many people just walked into gas chambers?” 2/

The wonder of Voyager: This is the most beautiful thread I’ve read in a long time.
About fifty years ago, NASA strapped a message in a bottle to a rocket and flung it into the deep dark
It wasn’t supposed to go this far, but it did. Long past its mission, it’s still out there so far away now that a simple hello takes a day to reach it, and another day to hear if it says hello back

Dear Rep. John Larson, I’m sorry I just learned your name today, but I promise you I won’t forget what you did. If you haven’t seen his speech, go watch it, then share it, and spread the word: MAKING A FUSS WORKS

Finally watched it and it was absolutely breathtaking 🥹🥲 Creative storytelling at its best. Can’t recommend enough!!!

ok Im not pissed only bc Sean Baker is obviously and clearly a great guy. Also I haven’t seen Anora yet but I bet it’s great. Based on his acceptance speech I expect nothing short of exceptional filmmaking.
if Brutalist doesn’t get the best director and the best movie I’ll get pissed

For one, they could trigger an exodus of bright but tired US scholars and scientists, offering better life quality overall, from all angles. Reversed Oppenheimer.
I am curious what it would take for Europe to fund a much more robust defense structure without overly cutting into the welfare state. What does that look like? It’s not money printer go brr, so what are the plausible directions?

I have never been so embarrassed by an administration… and I’m from Turkey
ZELENSKYY: Putin broke the ceasefire. What kind of diplomacy, JD, are you speaking about?

VANCE: I think it's disrespectful to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media

A republic if you can keep it
OK, I wrote my “who’s going to enforce it?” piece. It’s a lengthy read, trying to respond to a lot of questions I’ve gotten over the past three weeks, but it’s about democracy so I decided it was worth it to lay out in depth, with examples, what I’ve been talking about here and elsewhere.
Don't let Donald Trump and Elon Musk talk us out of democracy
Trump and Musk are testing the limits, trying to sell America on being an authoritarian state — but they can’t do it unless we allow them to do so.

Let us always share the story of Aaron Swartz.
My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.
