4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

New article from me about the Marshall Islands becoming the first country with a Universal Basic Income, what the details are, how it came to be, and what may come next.

Side note: It's hard to express how big a deal this is, especially for me personally. I hope this is the first of many dominoes.
The Marshall Islands Just Quietly Implemented the First National Universal Basic Income (UBI)
How the Marshall Islands built the first nationwide universal basic income, funded by a US-capitalized Compact Trust Fund, and what it means for UBI everywhere.

Not to be that guy always but a better thing to critically reflect on when thinking about the postwar British state and about the logic of protest/arrest/detention might be the 150,000 rural Kenyan forced into concentration camps between 1952 and 1960.

Another obvious point that can’t be overstated: all of this is happening in the ongoing wake (see Christina Sharpe) of the centuries long legacy of transatlantic slavery, the largest forced mass displacement and imprisonment of human beings in the history of the planet.
This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

We live in a country where about half the population thinks the other half must be FORCED TO WORK with the threat of starvation and homelessness. After universal basic income is achieved, we will live in a country where each of us knows that none need to be forced and that we all WANT TO CONTRIBUTE.

Latest data from Sam Altman's basic income pilot found that recipients valued work MORE, not less.

People were more motivated to earn more income through work.

There was NO conclusive reduction in work, except for single parents. Every 'critic' missed this. 🧵

This is why representation matters. This is why programs that support women in STEM (or any male dominated space) is important. I wish more men had this perspective and respect for their female peers.
