Hello! Haven't dropped into Bluesky for months, but over on Threads they are saying it's the place to be for writerly types.

Which is all very meta. (but not Meta)

How are you all? What are people writing? Who has a pet they'd like to share?

I'm still trying to publish my prequel short stories.

Hey Kobo readers,
fancy a medieval Breton snack? Then go and grab "Squire and Sword", the prequel to my Northumbria Trilogy, for only 99 cents this week. Offer ends on 21 June.

Butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth 😇 despite the 2000 little piranha teeth in there.

Who’s had a puppy and knows what I’m talking about? 🙋‍♀️

Nourishing, encouraging interview with Australian Christian poet Jodie McCarthy on the Gracewriters Podcast. Seasons of the writing life and how to add gracenotes in tough times when people are feeling “heavy”. Her Prayer for the Creative is especially beautiful 💜

Can anyone tell me:

If I sell a short story (including on Amazon) but also give it away as a subscriber bonus, will that break any rules?
Eg Amazon’s insistence that they get the lowest price.

I’m now working on two short stories instead of one novella. I have two main continuing characters in the series but they can’t both appear in the same story as they haven’t seen each other for many years prior to book 1. Has anyone done short stories as a subscriber bonus? Did it work for you?
I think I’m going to write a novella as a subscriber bonus, introducing the main character of my series. What do you think? Have you done similar?

Also, how long is a novella? I know it’s one of those “how long is a piece of string” questions but a omeone suggested 15,000 words.

In a tumultuous 2023, this was one of my biggest achievements. Publication of my second Wild Crimes mystery VENOM REEF and the second revised edition of POISON BAY.

Please reply with a pic of you with your 2023 books, if you’ve got ‘em. Let’s celebrate.

I don't really attend writers groups myself, but I have tended to people-please by following the various advice I read online.

Overworkshopping can be as big a problem as ignoring rules. If you try to follow all the rules and please everybody, you'll bore readers.
